The Quirky Horse 🐓

I've always been a firm believer that horses aren't quirky just for sh*ts and giggles.

There's always a reason behind the behaviour. Sometimes it's nothing to lose sleep over (pun intended šŸ˜‰), and other times it's a good reason to stop, put your detective hat on and look at the bigger picture.

Today was one of those days.

Some very odd behaviour, accompanied by noticeable physical and emotional changes, had me scratching my head.

A few simple tests ruled out some of my initial suspicions, but the pieces still weren't quite fitting together.

Turns out, I was looking in the wrong direction!

Did you know horses can suffer from sleep deprivation?

And no, we're not talking about a horse staying up until 3am scrolling through TikTok. šŸ˜‚

Sleep deprivation can have a significant impact on a horse's nervous system, affecting everything from physical coordination and responsiveness to emotional regulation and behaviour.

Sometimes what looks like a training problem isn't a training problem at all.

The horse isn't being difficult. The horse is having difficulty.

And that's why I believe it's so important to listen to what they're trying to tell us, even when they're speaking fluent weird. šŸ“šŸ˜‚

A young horse’s first time wearing a saddle should be incredibly uneventful. Like… offensively boring. šŸ˜‚

I’ve never understood the whole ā€œuse an old bunky saddle in case they trash your good oneā€ theory.

Because that old sh*tty saddle usually fits like a shopping trolley, flaps around everywhere, pinches in places it shouldn’t… and then everyone acts surprised when the young horse decides the apocalypse has arrived. šŸ˜…

A lot of the time, I’m putting gear on these youngsters that’s worth considerably more than the horse currently is.

So best believe my groundwork is solid before the expensive leather makes an appearance. šŸ˜‚

This is little Asha. He’s still a long way off carrying rider weight, and there’s absolutely no rush.ā¤ļø

For now, he’s learning all the boring little skills that make the exciting stuff much easier later on — ground tying, standing quietly, wearing his gear without drama, and coming correctly to the mounting block.

Because the first ride shouldn’t be a rodeo.

It should almost be a yawn to watch. 🄱

Just TWO of this week’s huge improvers šŸ™Œ

A couple of biomechanics lessons in, and these riders are already discovering the mildly offensive truth…

Sometimes the less you do, the better your horse goes. šŸ˜‚

They’re learning how much their own body influences the horse — and how tiny changes can create more engagement, softness and freedom through the shoulders, without riding like you’re trying to manually operate heavy machinery.

And pssst… 🤫
I also explain what inside leg to outside rein actually means, how to do it, and — wild concept — why we ask for it.

Because yelling ā€œMORE INSIDE LEG!ā€ only works if someone actually explains what the bloody hell that means. šŸ˜‚

Tell me your goals and let me hype you up while we smash them together ā¤ļø

Desensitising a horse isn’t about making them accept whatever is happening to them.

Because, let’s face it… we’ve all seen the horse who technically ā€œstands thereā€ while their soul quietly leaves the building. šŸ˜‚

That’s not what I’m after.

Desensitising is about teaching a horse to assess, think and regulate themselves when something unexpected happens — rather than immediately deciding that the plastic bag, flappy tarp, rogue wheelbarrow or suspicious-looking patch of grass has arrived specifically to end their life.

The goal isn’t a horse that doesn’t react.

The goal is a horse that can react, process what happened, and come back to you.

That ability to think when things don’t go to plan is what makes a horse safer to be around — and honestly, considering horses are basically 500kg professional overreactors with their own opinions, I’ll take every bit of emotional regulation I can teach them. šŸ˜‚

This is my own filly, Happy Hour.

And I’ve got a VERY long list of things I want her to accomplish.

But underneath all of it, there’s one thing I care about most:

Mental soundness.

I don’t need her to be fearless.

I need her to be able to think.

That’s what I’m building. A horse who can cope with the unexpected, regulate herself, and make good decisions when things get a little… spicy.

35 minutes from ā€œabsolutely fu***ng notā€ to ā€œyep, where are we going?ā€

That’s training. Not luck. šŸ“ā¤ļø

Marches straight in.
No drama.
No negotiation.

This is why I bang on about float loading.
Most loading problems aren’t nearly as complicated as owners think they are. Often, the horse isn’t being difficult, stubborn, claustrophobic, traumatised or plotting your downfall — they simply haven’t been taught clearly what the answer is.

Self-loading shouldn’t be a ā€œwell, fingers crossed and let’s see what happens todayā€ situation. šŸ˜‚

It should be a normal, boring, everyday skill your horse understands.

Every year I say this, summer will be here and along with it, FIRE season! Don't be the one to leave your horse behind in an evacuation because it doesnt load.

One of today’s lessons saw little Asha graduate to long reins! šŸŽ“šŸ“

He’s come such a long way in such a short amount of time, and honestly, that doesn’t happen by accident. It’s taken plenty of patience, consistency, and an owner who does the homework… even when I keep adding to it. šŸ˜‚

These two have put in the work, and it’s really starting to show.

Gold stars all round for this pair! āļøāļøā™„ļø
