Central Queensland beef producers Rob and Candy Cross, Fermanagh, Anakie, invest in elite Santa Gertrudis bulls for rapid genetic gain in their commercial herd because they are confident in the return on investment.
The Santa bullsโ longevity, lowering the cost per calf, in addition to quiet and consistent temperament, structural soundness, birthweight and calving ease are all big factors in their decision to stick with Santas.
The evidence says they are on the money.
In May this year, the couple topped the Emerald weaner sale with nine to 10-month-old Santa x Shorthorn steers, averaging 384kg, and returning 428c/kg or $1647. This was followed up last month with sale toppers averaging 353kg and returning 460c/kg or $1623.
