The “fisheries and aquaculture sector” is recognized as one of the sunshine sector in Bangladesh economy, employment opportunity and food security. It stimulates growth of a number of subsidiary industries and is the source of livelihood for a large section of the economicall
y backward population. It has a huge export potential and is a big source of foreign exchange earnings for the country. Ornamental fishes really are nature’s wonderful creation and also form an important commercial component of aquaculture, providing for aesthetic requirements and upkeep of environment. Ornamental fish keeping is the second most preferred hobby in the world and the number of hobbyists for ornamental fish keeping is rising day by day because it provides great opportunity for entrepreneurship development and income generation. Therefore, there is a dire need for development of ornamental fish breeding and culture practices, and technology in this country. Considering the emerging potential of this sector, an attempt has been made to establish the first scientific ornamental fish breeding research center (Brahmanbaria Ornamental Fish Breeding and Research Center) in Bangladesh, which will not only create new avenue for young generation but also encourage experimental
research in genetics and aquaculture sectors. Therefore, they will get opportunity to share their innovative ideas and views, and learn the techniques practically. The ornamental zebra fish have 70% similarity to human genomes that have been used as model research species for a long time in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sectors. It will also have great value of national and international market for empowering respectable citizens, providing new job opportunities for the unemployed youths as well as reducing poverty to a greater extent.
