Anyone who's grown up in the Darjeeling belt or Nepal, knows exactly what this plate of Piro Aloo Dum means. It's pure emotion! As kids with little pocket money, all you needed was Rs. 5 for a bowl of this piping hot aloo dum with just a sprinkle of bhujiya (a variant of the humble chanachur) to fill your stomach. Not that you were hungry, really. But the "bhukkar" (starving) kid in you needed a bowl of aloo dum and momo every single short break you got!
That five rupees could procure an astonishing array of food items in the hills. You'd go to any local shop. Almost every one of them would be run by families and aloo dum, momo, Taipo, and maggi and wai wai noodles would be readily available. Some times, they'd even get the food from their personal home kitchens if the shop had run out of food that day. That's the level of their hospitality for anyone who stops by!
Coming back to the Rs. 5. You could order the piro aloo dum for two rupees, spend the remaining two rupees on 2 pieces of momo, and buy bhujiya or mama (a small pack of noodles) for just one rupee. So the breakdown for the food combination would be of Rs. 2+2+1. It was that cheap and that fulfilling!
Oh, and the red chilli chutney was complimentary and never ending! If you luckily had tem of twenty rupees, consider yourself rich! Haha.
Those days are now long gone. It's unimaginable that we, international students who went to schools in the Darjeeling district, grew up so frugally and yet have come back with the best of memories, including that of food.
My attempt with the The Darjeeling Express, is not merely to build a business, but bring that emotion to the students and tourists of the Himalayas. The hills have a soul of their own, and it definitely reaches your stomach through the warm and spicy and hearty food of the mighty Himalayas.
This Piro Aloo Dum is certainly not for the faint hearted. The name says it all in Nepali. The word "piro" means hot. Not any kind of hot, but really hot! But boy, would you keep reaching for more...
Are you ready to take on the heat?
