Food Loss vs Food Waste | Khaddology

The food you throw away vs. the food you never even see. 🌍🍽️

We talk a lot about "food waste" in the culinary world, but if we want to fix our broken food system, we have to understand the difference between Loss and Waste.

Here is the science behind the leak:

🚜 FOOD LOSS (The Upstream Problem)

This happens before the food ever reaches the grocery store. It’s systemic. It’s the tomatoes crushed in a truck on a bad road, or the grain rotting in a silo due to poor infrastructure. It is a failure of the system.

🛒 FOOD WASTE (The Downstream Problem)

This happens in our supermarkets and our kitchens. It’s behavioral. It’s the leftovers we scrape into the bin, the bag of spinach we let turn into liquid in the fridge, or the "ugly" apples supermarkets refuse to sell. It is a failure of habit.
Why does this matter to food lovers?
Because respecting ingredients means understanding their entire journey. Whether it's a systemic loss or a behavioral waste, it all drains our planet's water, spikes greenhouse gases, and threatens global food security.

We need better infrastructure to minimize loss, and better kitchen habits to reduce waste.

We aren’t just wasting food. We are wasting the planet. 🌍

Did you know that nearly 1/3 of all food produced globally is lost or wasted?

At Khaddology, we look at the science behind the system. When you throw away a meal, you aren't just tossing out calories. You are discarding the embedded resources that went into making it:
đź’§ The water used for irrigation.
đźšś The fuel burned for transport.
⚡ The energy used for cold storage.

The Climate Reality:
Food waste in landfills creates Methane—a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO2. We are effectively paying to heat up our own planet.
Swipe ➡️ to understand the full cycle and see how small changes in your kitchen can fix a massive leak in the global food system.
