Today is the 56th Black Tot Day, the day the British Royal Navy ended its centuries-old tradition of issuing a daily rum ration to sailors. On July 31, 1970, at exactly 11:00 AM ("6 Bells of the Forenoon"), the final call of "Up Spirits" echoed across British naval vessels. Sailors drank their last tot of rum with great ceremony. Some wore black armbands, carried mock coffins across the decks, or tossed their rations into the sea in symbolic funerals.
