At Engenhos do Norte in Porto da Cruz, steam-powered machines still run, sugar cane is still cut by hand, and rum is still distilled just once a year, during the harvest, from fresh cane juice only. No molasses. No flavourings. No shortcuts.

It's one of Madeira's oldest working distilleries, and a living piece of the island's industrial heritage.

“We have kept the same system since the beginning.”

That is how Engenhos do Norte describes a distillery where steam, sugar cane and machinery more than a century old remain part of everyday production.

Located in Porto da Cruz, Engenhos do Norte is one of the last working steam-powered sugar cane mills in Europe. Its continued operation is not simply a matter of preserving the past. It is a living production site, where traditional equipment, local sugar cane and generations of experience continue to shape Rum da Madeira.

We spoke with the team about the history of the distillery, its production methods and the challenges of keeping such a remarkable site alive.
