We've reached the final page of the Special Opening Supplement from The Royal Gazette, December 7th, 1972, and what a journey these twelve pages have been.

This page carries a headline that feels like the perfect way to close: "Team spirit is evident at Barritt's where all are keen to do a good job." Looking back through everything we've shared in this series, truer words were never printed.

From W.J. Barritt's modest corner store on King Street to a state-of-the-art plant on Verdmont Road. From horse and cart deliveries to a modern fleet covering every corner of the island. From hand-filled bottles corked with wire stoppers to X-ray quality control and a high speed can line to meet consumer demand for new packaging and beverage flavours. From a four-man business to a team of dedicated Bermudians whose names and faces proudly filled these twelve pages on the official opening of the new facility.

Alvin Weir's technical skill and Laurence Moniz's production expertise helped modernize equipment and packaging. Staff at Verdmont Road's opening dinner:

Standing: Stanley Outerbridge, Ezzard Young, Ronnie Madeiros, William Thomas, Louis Tavares, Bobby Barritt, Ronnie Harris, Alvin Stelter, Charles Parker, Cyril Smith, Lionel Edwards, Ronnie Alves, Clifford Davis, James Gordon Wainwright.

Seated: Laurence Moniz, Suzanne Graham, Leon Barritt, Annie Place, Jack Allen, Judy Burgess, Alec Russell, Jack White.

And holding it all together, then and now, are people like Ms. Laverne Edness, featured on this very page in 1972 as a young bookkeeping machine operator who had been with the company for four years and had demonstrated determination to learn and a willingness to take on responsibility. Ms. Edness and her pleasant personality is still with us today, in her 58th year of service to John Barritt & Son.

She is, in every sense, the living embodiment of this company's story.

Thank you for following along with us through this series. We hope it brought back memories, sparked some curiosity, and reminded you just how deep the roots of this little Bermudian company go. 🇧🇲❤️

Page 11 of the Special Opening Supplement from The Royal Gazette, December 7th, 1972, and while this page holds a detailed history of an international beverage brand it also quietly contains one of the most remarkable details in the entire supplement.

In 1964, Frederick G. Barritt was honoured at a dinner at the Old Colony Club to mark the completion of 60 years with John Barritt & Son. Sixty years. He had joined the company before the First World War, before commercial radio, before Bermuda had a single motor car on its roads, and he was still there, still showing up, still contributing, six decades later.

At the dinner, a silver tray was presented to him by Oscar White, an employee of 37 years himself, who had put in 40 years with John Barritt & Son before his death in 1967. Even the gift told a story of loyalty running deep.

That kind of dedication, 60 years from one man, 40 from another, speaks to something that can't be manufactured or marketed. It speaks to a workplace where people felt they belonged, where their contribution was seen and valued, and where the work itself meant something.

This page also gives us a wonderful glimpse of a 1950 photograph of long-service employees J.G. “CAP” Swan, 60 years with the company, Gerald Young, 25 years, Oscar White, and W. Young, 20 years, all standing behind a seated Fred Barritt and his eldest son Leon Barritt. Fred and Leon were the third and fourth generations of the Barritt family to manage the business and this group of men between them represented well over a century of combined service to this little Bermudian company.

Some people don't just work for a company. They become part of it. 🇧🇲
