🚨 YOUR CHICKS’ FIRST DAY CAN AFFECT THEIR ENTIRE GROWTH JOURNEY!
Before the chicks arrive, your brooder should already be ready. 🐥🔥
One of the biggest mistakes in broiler farming and chicken farming is waiting until the chicks arrive before preparing the brooder.
❌ Don’t wait. Prepare first.
🐥 WHAT IS BROODING?
Brooding is the process of providing young chicks with the warmth, shelter, protection, feed, water and proper environment they need during their early days of life, before they can regulate their body temperature effectively.
🏠 WHAT IS A BROODER?
A brooder is the prepared area or setup where young chicks are kept during the brooding period. It provides controlled warmth, protection, ventilation, lighting, feed and water.
A well-prepared brooder is one of the foundations of good poultry farming and healthy broiler growth.
🔥 HOW TO PREPARE YOUR BROODER PROPERLY
1️⃣ Clean and disinfect the brooding area
Remove dirt, old litter and droppings. Clean and disinfect the floor, walls, feeders, drinkers and other equipment. Allow everything to dry properly.
2️⃣ Prepare clean, dry litter
Spread suitable litter evenly across the floor. Avoid wet, dusty or mouldy litter, as it can create problems for young chicks.
3️⃣ Install and test your heat source 🔥
Whether you use a gas brooder, electric heater, heat lamp or another suitable heat source, make sure it is safely installed and working before the chicks arrive.
4️⃣ Preheat the brooder
This step is VERY important. Start the heat source early enough for the brooding area and litter to reach a suitable temperature before the chicks are introduced.
5️⃣ Arrange feeders and drinkers
Position them where chicks can easily find them. Make sure there is enough access to prevent unnecessary competition.
6️⃣ Provide clean drinking water 💧
Have fresh, clean water ready before the chicks arrive. Any supplement or medication should only be used when there is a specific reason and proper guidance.
7️⃣ Check ventilation
The brooder should be warm without becoming stuffy. Good ventilation provides fresh air while avoiding direct drafts blowing onto the chicks.
8️⃣ Test everything before arrival
Check the heat source, lighting, feeders, drinkers and brooder boundaries.
It is much better to discover a problem before the chicks arrive than when they are already inside.
🚨 THE GOLDEN RULE
Never let your chicks arrive before your brooder is ready.
A properly prepared brooder can help reduce early stress and give your chicks a stronger start toward healthy broiler growth.
🐥 Good brooding management is the foundation for successful broiler farming.
Farmer, how many hours before your chicks arrive do you normally prepare and preheat your brooder? 👇

🐔 COMPLETE BROILER FEEDING PLAN: HOW MANY FEED BAGS YOU NEED FROM DAY-OLD TO MARKET WEIGHT 🐔

Many broiler farmers lose profit because feed finishes earlier than expected or birds stay too long before sale. Since feed takes over 65–70% of broiler production costs, proper planning is very important before bringing chicks to the farm.

A healthy broiler bird consumes about 4 kg of feed from day-old to 6 weeks, divided into 3 feeding stages:

✅ Starter Feed — Day 1 to Day 14
✅ Grower Feed — Day 15 to Day 28
✅ Finisher Feed — Day 29 to Market Age
One standard feed bag = 50 kg

🐣 1. STARTER FEED (DAY 1–14)

Starter mash contains high protein levels for early growth, feather development, and strong bones.
📌 Feed intake per chick: 0.8 kg
Practical Feeding Guide
✔ Give feed freely throughout the day
✔ Provide clean water at all times
✔ Maintain brooder temperature at 32–34°C during week 1
✔ Reduce temperature gradually by 2–3°C weekly

Feed Bags Needed
🔹 50 chicks → 1 bag
🔹 100 chicks → 2 bags
🔹 200 chicks → 4 bags
🔹 500 chicks → 8 bags
🔹 1,000 chicks → 16 bags

🐔 2. GROWER FEED (DAY 15–28)

At this stage, birds grow rapidly and require balanced nutrients for muscle and body development.
📌 Feed intake per bird: 1.2 kg
Important Management Tips
✔ Avoid sudden feed changes
✔ Introduce grower feed gradually over 2 days
✔ Ensure enough feeder space to reduce competition
✔ Remove wet litter immediately to prevent disease

Feed Bags Needed
🔹 50 birds → 1–2 bags
🔹 100 birds → 2–3 bags
🔹 200 birds → 5 bags
🔹 500 birds → 12 bags
🔹 1,000 birds → 24 bags

🍗 3. FINISHER FEED (DAY 29–42)

Finisher feed supports rapid weight gain and better feed conversion.
📌 Feed intake per bird: 2 kg
Birds eat most feed during this stage, so farmers should monitor feed daily.
Feed Bags Needed
🔹 50 birds → 2 bags
🔹 100 birds → 4 bags
🔹 200 birds → 7 bags
🔹 500 birds → 20 bags
🔹 1,000 birds → 40 bags

📌 TOTAL FEED REQUIREMENTS
✔ 100 birds → About 8 bags
✔ 300 birds → About 24 bags
✔ 500 birds → About 40 bags
✔ 1,000 birds → About 80 bags

⚠️ WHAT HAPPENS AFTER 6 WEEKS?
Most broilers are ready for market at 6 weeks. Keeping birds longer increases feed costs because weight gain slows down.
If delaying sale: ✔ Prepare an extra 1–2 finisher bags for every 50 birds weekly
✔ Continue clean water supply
✔ Reduce overcrowding to avoid stress

Cold kills faster than any disease.
And most farmers don't find out until the bodies are on the floor.
Let me paint you a picture. Emeka set up his pen two days before his chicks arrived. He swept it clean, arranged the feeders, filled the drinkers, and felt proud. The chicks came in — beautiful, fluffy, day-old broilers. He put them down and went to sleep.
The next morning, 11 were dead. Clumped together in one corner.
His pen was clean. His water was clean. His feed was good. But his brooder was wrong.
The brooder is the single most important structure in your first two weeks of broiler farming. It is where your chicks spend their most vulnerable days. Get it right and your birds will thrive. Get it wrong and you will lose money before you even begin.
Here is what a proper brooder setup looks like:
✅ Space: In the first week, confine chicks to a small circle — about 1 square metre for every 50 chicks. Use carton or cardboard to create a ring. This keeps them close to heat and food.
✅ Heat source: Use an infrared heat lamp or a gas brooder. Position it at the right height — if chicks scatter away from it, lower it a little. If they crowd under it tightly, raise it.
✅ Bedding: Use dry wood shavings, not sawdust. Sawdust is too fine — chicks eat it and it blocks their gut. Shavings should be about 5–7cm deep.
✅ Feeders and drinkers: Place them inside the brooder ring, close to the chicks. A hungry chick that has to walk far to eat in cold air will die before it eats.
✅ Ventilation vs draught: Your pen needs air — but not wind. There's a difference. Seal the lower parts of your walls. Let fresh air come from higher vents only.
✅ Lighting: Keep your brooder well-lit for 23 hours in Week 1. Light encourages chicks to eat and drink.
Brooder setup is not expensive. But the mistake of doing it wrong will cost you far more than any equipment.
