Smart record keeping for better cattle farming

Keeping good records is one of the best things a farmer can do to grow a successful beef or dairy cattle business. Good records help you know how your animals are doing, make better decisions, and earn more money. They are also helpful for planning, getting loans, and improving the cattle industry in your area or country.

Why record keeping is important:

* Helps you manage your animals better
* Gives you a stronger voice when selling your products
* Helps you choose the best animals to keep or sell
* Increases the value of your cattle
* Helps avoid inbreeding and plan better breeding
* Helps remove poor-performing animals
* Shows if you’re making a profit or loss
* Helps with budgeting and planning
* Makes it easier to get loans or credit
* Helps manage workers
* Helps track animal health and control diseases
* Helps plan feeding and reduce waste

Types of records to keep

Here are the main types of records every cattle farmer should have:

1. Animal identification records
2. Breeding records
3. Production (performance) records
4. Feeding records
5. Health records
6. Financial records

Animal identification records

Every animal should have its own identity. This helps you tell them apart and track their progress. Identification methods can be permanent or temporary.

Permanent methods: tattooing the ear, describing the animal’s features with photos or drawings, ear notching (cutting small shapes in the ear), branding with hot iron or freeze methods.

Temporary methods: tags on ears, neck, or tail, collars with numbers, paint or colored marks, braiding hair, giving names.

Breeding records

These help you track which animals are reproducing well. A good cow should give birth to one healthy calf every year.
