🌿🧽 THE MOMENT WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR… OUR FIRST LUFFA TEST HARVEST!! 😱💚

Well, everyone… after MONTHS of growing, watching, waiting and wondering, we're finally taking the plunge! 😂🌱

Today we're harvesting ONE of our homegrown luffas to see how those incredible fibres are developing!

And there's a pretty good reason why we're doing it now…

🥶 Temperatures could drop to -5°C Saturday morning here in Angus, Ontario! 🇨🇦

We've been giving these beauties as much time as possible to mature on the vines, and some are finally getting lighter and changing colour.

But Mother Nature isn't going to wait forever! 🍁😂

So today we're putting all that patience to the test!

🌿 Is our luffa mature enough?
🧽 Have we grown our very own natural sponge?
👀 And what does this mean for the rest of our harvest?!

One thing's for sure… gardening is always an adventure, and there's something new to learn every single day!

🌿🦎 A PLANT THAT CAN CHANGE COLOUR IN MINUTES?! 🤯

Good morning, everyone! Welcome back to another Morning Featured Plant here at Canadian Veggie Grower! 🌴💚

Today we're taking a closer look at our beautiful Begonia soli-mutata, also known as the Sun-Changing Begonia! ☀️🌿

And this little tropical beauty has some pretty incredible secrets!

🇧🇷 Native to Brazil! This fascinating begonia comes from the tropical forests of South America.

☀️ Sun-changing leaves! Its foliage can change appearance in response to different light conditions, sometimes within minutes!

🦎 Reptile-like texture! Just look at those beautiful, textured leaves. They almost look like something from prehistoric times! 😂

🌱 Rhizomatous growth! This begonia grows from creeping stems near the soil surface, helping it form beautiful clusters of foliage.

It's amazing how much there is to discover about the plants we're growing right here in our little Canadian tropical jungle! 🇨🇦🌴

🌴🌙 DAY 139 NIGHTTIME JUNGLE CHECK-IN! 💚

🥶 MINUS 5°C?! Mother Nature is certainly keeping us on our toes! 😂🍁

Good evening, everyone! Welcome back to another relaxing evening inside our little tropical jungle here in Ontario, Canada! 🇨🇦🌿

🍍 Our pineapple continues developing its very first fruit!

🍌 Our banana plants are looking beautiful!

🌴 And the rest of our tropical jungle is still growing strong!

But OUTSIDE… we've got a little situation developing! 👀

With temperatures potentially dropping to -5°C Saturday morning here in Angus, we're running out of time with our luffas!

We've been giving them every opportunity to mature on the vines, but we may finally harvest ONE to see how those fibres are coming along! 🌿🧽

And of course, we'll bring you along for the adventure!

Do you think we'll find a beautiful sponge inside, or are we harvesting too early?! 👀👇

Sometimes Mother Nature makes the decisions for us! 😂💚

🌳🫒 DID YOU KNOW OLIVE TREES CAN LIVE OVER 1,000 YEARS?! 🤯🌿

And believe it or not… we're growing TWO of these incredible trees right here in Ontario, Canada! 🇨🇦😂

Good morning everyone, and welcome back to another Morning Featured Plant here at Canadian Veggie Grower! 💚

Today we're taking a closer look at our beautiful olive trees, and these Mediterranean beauties have some fascinating secrets!

🌳 Incredible longevity! Some olive trees can survive for more than a thousand years, making them some of the longest-living cultivated fruit trees!

☀️ Beautiful silvery foliage! Their leaves have silvery undersides that help reflect sunlight and reduce heat stress in their native Mediterranean climate.

🫒 They can produce olives! With sufficient sunlight, appropriate seasonal temperatures, maturity and suitable pollination, olive trees can eventually reward growers with their own fruit!

🌿 Growing in Ontario! Since our Canadian winters are far too harsh for most olive varieties outdoors, we're growing ours in our protected greenhouse.

Now, whether we'll eventually harvest our own olives remains to be seen, but that's half the fun of gardening! 😂💚

It's amazing what we can experiment with growing when we're willing to learn, adapt and try something different!

And that's exactly what we love doing here at Canadian Veggie Grower! 🌱

🌙🌴 DAY 138 A PEACEFUL THANKSGIVING NIGHT IN OUR JUNGLE! 🍁🇨🇦💚

Well everyone, what a beautiful Thanksgiving it's been! 🥰

After spending the day with family, there's something extra special about coming home and taking a peaceful walk through our little tropical jungle.

And would you look at that… another nighttime check-in when it's actually DARK outside! 😂🌌

Tonight we're taking a relaxing stroll through our greenhouse here in Ontario, Canada, checking in on some of our tropical favourites!

🍍 Our pineapple, continuing its incredible journey!

🌿 Our colourful croton, bringing beautiful tropical colours into the greenhouse!

🌱 Our shampoo ginger, one of our more unusual tropical plants!

🌵 Our dragon fruit, always finding new ways to grow!

As the autumn temperatures continue dropping outside, our greenhouse is still filled with tropical greenery, warmth and life! 🌴💚

And with today being Thanksgiving, I can't help but reflect on how much we have to be thankful for.

My family, the memories we're making with our daughter, the gardening adventures we've shared, and this wonderful community that continues to support us every single day.

Whether you've been following since Day 1 or just discovered Canadian Veggie Grower, thank you for being part of our journey! 🥹❤️

🍁🧄 GARDENING SEASON ISN'T OVER JUST YET! 🌱😂

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! 🇨🇦🍁💚

Today we're back outside in our vegetable garden here in Ontario, Canada, and although our summer growing season is coming to an end, we're already preparing for next year's harvest!

That's right… it's almost GARLIC PLANTING TIME! 🧄🌿

But before we get those cloves into the ground, we've got some work to do!

🍂 Cleaning up our finished summer crops

🌱 Removing weeds and clearing our garden beds

🌿 Preparing our soil for fall planting

🧄 Getting everything ready for garlic in another week or two!

And here's a fun fact for anyone new to gardening…

Here in Ontario, we plant garlic in the FALL, not the spring!

Those little cloves begin establishing roots before winter, survive the cold months underground, and get growing again when spring arrives!

Then, come next summer, we'll hopefully be harvesting some beautiful homegrown garlic! 🧄☀️

There's something pretty amazing about preparing for next year's harvest while we're still saying goodbye to this year's garden!

And on this Thanksgiving afternoon, we're especially thankful for everything our garden has provided, the memories we've created and all of YOU who continue following our adventures! 🥰💚

🍌🌴 BANANAS ARE BERRIES?! SAY WHAT?! 🤯😂

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! 🍁🇨🇦💚

Welcome back to another Morning Featured Plant here at Canadian Veggie Grower!

Today we're taking a closer look at our beautiful Dwarf Cavendish Banana, growing right here in our tropical greenhouse in Ontario, Canada! 🌴

And believe it or not, this plant has some pretty incredible facts!

🍌 Bananas are actually berries! Botanically speaking, that's exactly what they are!

🌿 Banana plants aren't trees! They're giant herbaceous plants, and their trunks are actually tightly wrapped leaf bases!

🌱 Each pseudostem only produces bananas once! After fruiting, it eventually dies back, allowing new pups to take over!

And the best part? With enough patience, warmth and proper care, we may eventually harvest our very own Ontario-grown bananas! 🍌🇨🇦

Now THAT would be something! 😂💚

With today being Thanksgiving, we also want to take a moment to say how thankful we are for our family, all the wonderful memories we're creating together and every single one of YOU who continues to support our gardening adventures!

🌙🌴 DAY 137 OUR FIRST TRUE NIGHTTIME JUNGLE WALK! 😂💚

Well everyone… would you look at THIS?!

After 137 days of nighttime jungle check-ins, we're finally doing one when it's actually DARK outside! 🌌😂

And honestly, what a perfect evening for it!

It's been an incredible Thanksgiving weekend here at Canadian Veggie Grower! 🇨🇦🍁

🎃 Yesterday, we celebrated our vertically grown pumpkin officially weighing in at 46 pounds at Woodbridge!

🍍 Today, we returned to our Morning Featured Plants with our tropical pineapple!

🌴 And tonight, we're back doing what we love… taking a peaceful walk through our little Canadian jungle!

With Thanksgiving tomorrow, I've been thinking about how much we have to be thankful for.

My family, the memories we're creating together, and this wonderful gardening community that continues to grow alongside us. 💚

Whether you've been following since the beginning or just recently discovered our jungle, THANK YOU for being part of the adventure! 🥰🌱

🍍🌴 FROM A 46-POUND PUMPKIN TO A TROPICAL PINEAPPLE?! 😂🇨🇦

Good morning everyone, and welcome BACK to our Morning Featured Plants! ☀️🌿

After yesterday's incredible adventure taking our vertically grown pumpkin to its official weigh-in at Woodbridge, we're back inside our tropical jungle here in Angus, Ontario!

And today's Featured Plant is one we've been growing for quite some time…

🍍 OUR PINEAPPLE PLANT!

What's so special about this one?

🌱 We started it from the crown of a store-bought pineapple back in May 2025!

🌴 We've been growing it inside our tropical greenhouse right here in Ontario!

🤯 Pineapples don't grow on trees! They're produced by low-growing tropical plants.

🌸 A pineapple fruit develops from many individual flowers that eventually fuse together!

🍍 And each plant typically produces one main pineapple before its offshoots continue the growing cycle!

It's incredible what you can grow when you're willing to experiment, learn and give something a try!

And that's exactly what we're doing here at Canadian Veggie Grower! 💚

Our dream is to eventually harvest our very own pineapple while there's snow on the ground outside! 😂❄️🍍

🎃⚖️ AFTER MONTHS OF GROWING VERTICALLY… THE OFFICIAL RESULTS ARE IN!! 🇨🇦💚

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DAY!! 😂🎃

Today we reached the finish line of a gardening adventure that started months ago, right here in Angus, Ontario!

We set out to do something a little different…

Grow a GIANT PUMPKIN completely suspended above the ground on a vertical trellis! 🎃🌿

Through the growing season, we documented everything!

🌱 Watching the pumpkin develop and grow

💪 Supporting its increasing weight

📏 Measuring and documenting its progress

🥶 Protecting it as the temperatures started dropping

🎃 And finally harvesting it for the big day!

Today, we loaded up our pumpkin and headed to the Woodbridge Fall Fair for its OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN! ⚖️

And after all that anticipation…

🎆🎃 OUR OFFICIAL WEIGHT WAS 46 POUNDS!! 🎃🎆

Now, 46 pounds might not sound like much compared to the enormous pumpkins at these competitions…

But ours was grown VERTICALLY, suspended above the ground throughout its growing journey!

And honestly, that's what makes this achievement so special to me.

Even better, I got to share this incredible experience with my daughter. 💚

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who followed this journey, made predictions, offered encouragement and cheered us on along the way!

And thank you to everyone involved in making the Woodbridge weigh-in possible!

This was our first attempt… and you better believe we're already thinking about next year! 😂🎃
