πŸŒ™πŸŒ΄ DAY 95 Winter prep is starting in our Canadian tropical jungle! β„οΈπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

My little gardening partner joined me tonight, and you might notice the greenhouse is already looking a little different! ❀️🌱

We've moved some plants around, brought our water barrel back inside and we'll soon be adding more grow lights to eliminate some of those darker areas as we head toward the shorter days of fall and winter. πŸ’‘πŸŒ΄
We learned SO much keeping this jungle growing through Winter #1 β€” and this year we're going to take you along for the entire Winter #2 setup.
But don't worry...summer growing isn't finished yet.

Especially according to that GIANT pumpkin. πŸ˜‚πŸŽƒ

🌿 DAY 95 FEATURED PLANT β€” FINALLY! πŸ˜‚

We've spent 95 days taking you through our tropical jungle, and somehow this beautiful plant has never had its own Featured Plant episode!

Meet our Chinese Evergreen- Aglaonema. 🌱

It's been quietly growing among the bananas, pineapple, citrus and other tropicals, but today we're giving that gorgeous foliage the attention it deserves. ❀️🌿

Chinese Evergreens are known for being relatively forgiving houseplants. They tolerate lower-light conditions, prefer not to sit in constantly soggy soil, and something people may not realize, they can flower too! 🌸

Sometimes it's the plants quietly growing in the background that surprise you.

Do you have a Chinese Evergreen at home?

πŸŒ™πŸŒ΄ That's a wrap on DAY 94!

Today was definitely a special one around Canadian Veggie Grower. β€οΈπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

My daughter joined me on her birthday this morning and got to choose our Featured Plant, the Cavendish banana! πŸŒπŸŽ‚ We also showed the new pups growing from BOTH our banana and grocery-store pineapple. 🌱🍍

This afternoon we pulled out the footage from Winter #1 and showed exactly how this tropical jungle made it through a Canadian winter. β„οΈπŸŒ΄

And tonight? We're slowing things down and taking our usual nighttime gander through the greenhouse and outdoor garden.

The pineapple keeps developing, the jungle keeps growing, and that vertically grown pumpkin is STILL hanging there! πŸ˜‚πŸŽƒ

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who wished my daughter a Happy Birthday today. We've been reading your messages and they helped make her day even more special. ❀️

Day 94 is done. Tomorrow we start DAY 95!

β„οΈπŸŒ΄ Here's the proof from Winter #1!

Every time we start talking about winter, someone asks the same question: Can a greenhouse full of tropical plants really make it through a Canadian winter? πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

We don't have to guess, we already did it.

Last winter we built an outer winter frame, insulated and protected the greenhouse, used thermostatic heat and learned what it actually takes to keep this jungle growing through winter.

The result?

We didn't just survive winter. The plants kept GROWING. 🌱🌴
And just look at that greenhouse now! 🀯

Winter #1 taught us a lot, which means we're heading into Winter #2 even better prepared.

We'll be showing the entire fall/winter setup again soon, so stay tuned! β„οΈπŸŒ΄

πŸŽ‚πŸŒ Day 94 is a special one!

Today is my daughter's birthday, so SHE got to choose our morning Featured Plant and she picked the banana! ❀️🌴

And she picked a great day to check it because our banana is growing a pup! Then we walked over to our grocery-store pineapple and discovered the same thing happening there. 🍍🌱

Two tropical plants, two new pups, all growing in our greenhouse here in Canada. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

But today the plants took a back seat for a moment. Out of everything I've had the privilege of watching grow, my favourite was standing right beside me. ❀️

Happy Birthday to my little gardening partner! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‚

πŸŒ΄πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ DAY 93 Our nightly Jungle Check-In!

It's hard to believe we're already 93 days into this journey. The tropicals are thriving, the garden is still producing and those vertically grown pumpkins just keep getting bigger! πŸŽƒπŸŒ±

But there's something coming that quite a few people have been asking about…Canadian winter. πŸ‘€β„οΈ

Some people aren't convinced this jungle can make it.

Tomorrow afternoon, we're going into that one, and we have footage from last winter. πŸ˜‰πŸŒ΄

πŸπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR NEXT PINEAPPLE TOP!

Day 93 of growing our tropical jungle in Canada, and today's featured plant started with something most people probably toss in the compost, the crown of a grocery-store pineapple!
We rooted ours in water for about three months before planting it, and look at it now. 🌱🍍

Pineapples are actually bromeliads, and eventually the fruit develops from the centre of the plant. 🀯
Maybe growing tropical plants in Canada isn't as crazy as it sounds! πŸ˜‚πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸŒ΄

Would you try growing one?

πŸŒ΄πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ DAY 92!

For 92 days we’ve been documenting what happens when you try to create a tropical jungle right here in Canada and tonight we're taking another walk through everything that's growing. πŸŒπŸπŸ‹πŸŒ΅

Some of these plants aren't exactly what you'd expect to see growing in a Canadian backyard. πŸ˜‚

The best part? We're still just getting started.

We’re growing our own sponges… AND the shampoo to go with them! 🀯🌿🧽

Our luffa gourds are getting closer to maturity, and once they fully ripen and dry, we’ll peel them, remove the seeds and reveal the natural luffa sponge inside.
And the coolest part? Right alongside them, we’re growing shampoo ginger, traditionally known for the fragrant liquid produced by its mature flower cones. 🌺🌿

From the garden to something we can actually use around the house. This is exactly why I love growing things people don't always expect to see growing here in Canada. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ’š

Can you REALLY grow dragon fruit in Canada?! πŸŒ΅πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ˜‚

Welcome to Day 92! Today we're taking a gander at our dragon fruit, and this climbing cactus has been busy. πŸ‘€
After topping the plant, we've now got two new side shoots developing, and we're going to continue training them vertically as this plant grows.

Getting this plant mature enough to flower and eventually grow our very own Canadian-grown dragon fruit!

Think we can do it? πŸ˜‚πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦
