Quite the snapper!

Here's a better look at the huge snapping turtle patient we recently released. The Common Snapping Turtle can get huge! They can grow up to 35 pounds (or more!) and they get their name from their powerful jaws that are capable of snapping at incredible speeds with the force equivalent to a strong human bite.

All of our freshwater turtle species here in Nova Scotia are classified as at-risk. Habitat loss and fragmentation causes wandering turtles, in particular mothers looking for appropriate nesting sites, to cross busy roads. Because of all that wandering, almost all of our turtle trauma cases are the result of car accidents.

Snapping turtles often suffer facial and jaw injuries from a very specific cause.. Since they defensively snap at perceived threats, that also includes vehicle undercarriages, and they are big enough to reach them, even if they manage to avoid the tires.
