This is the first time I've EVER planted any kind of bulb flower. I managed to squeeze these into the garden last fall and they're the first flowers up in the garden and now I want to plant more bulbs all over in the fall!

We've been enjoying the milder weather lately. Can't help it but stop and wonder at the hoarfrost!

Some may say our animals are 'spoiled' but our goal is to provide them with quality care while they are with us, and if that means doing some things that may seem a bit 'extra' to keep them comfortable, especially in our frigid winters then we do what we can!

This is our first winter with chickens and I wanted them to have to ability to go out into their run when it was warm enough to stretch their legs and get some fresh air. I'm not sure if it'll work all winter but we ended up wrapping our run in thick poly. We are planning on building a more permanent run in the future but are working with what we have for now. It is surprisingly warm in there and keeps out the wind and snow. When it's below -25 Celsius the coop door stays shut and they don't get to go out but warmer than that they can enjoy at least a few hours out during the day.

We also have a few outside cats. They have access to our heated shop but like to spend time on our deck as well, especially close to feeding time (yes our 'barn' cats are fed twice per day, not free fed). My husband built a very well insulated cat house on our deck for them to have another cozy place to be closer to the house.

What do you do for your animals that might be a little 'extra'?

Our chickens have been laying like crazy, we've been getting at least 20 eggs a day!

I put the garden to bed for the winter a few weeks back and forgot to post about it!

I start by removing all my straw/mulch from the garden bed, then remove any plants and any bigger weeds. Next, I add a nice layer of compost. This year I was able to use my own compost for the whole garden which was a bonus!
After the compost layer I add more straw/mulch on top and water it in.

It's a bit of a process but it makes things much easier in the spring.

I also planted my garlic, some small onion bulbs I found and some different flower bulbs.

How do you prep your garden for the winter?

We have nesting boxes in the chicken coop now and I am happy to report all 3 meat hens have started using them right away!

They open from the back for easy access and we have enough space for when the newer hens start laying.
