appy to announce that we are in the process of transitioning our farm to the fourth generation. Our daughter Danielle and her husband Jared became involved with the farm in October of 2019. Our farm and what we produce and how we produce it has not changed; the only change is that Danielle and Jared are living at the farm and are responsible for the day to day operations.

This has felt like the longest calving season ever. We only have a small herd, but the weather has certainly kept things interesting. We started out calving through an April snowstorm, then extreme heat and crazy winds in May, and now we’ve officially received four inches of rain over the last three days.

On the bright side, we’re hoping to turn everyone out onto a new pasture this weekend. And with all this MUCH needed rain, our dugouts should finally be full enough to use as a water source again.

Here’s hoping these little mud calves are the last challenge of the season!

And then sometimes, despite your best efforts, a calf is backwards and already gone by the time you get it out.

It’s a humbling experience, one that leaves you second-guessing yourself over and over again. But in that pause, and in the grief I feel for the cow, I try to remind myself of all the triumphs that same pen has brought me, and how proud 12-year-old Danielle would be.

There’s always tomorrow, and always another lesson to learn.

I would say “brush yourself off,” but in this case it’s more of a “strip outside” situation. 🤣

Shoutout to Camrose Veterinary Hospital for always being so gracious and helpful. The calf and cow are both doing great. 👌
