Summer Position

The Hamm Ranch (near Central Butte, SK) is hiring a Junior Shepherd & Ranch Hand.

If you enjoy open skies, working outdoors, and being part of something real—this could be a great fit.

We’re looking for a full-time summer employee, but will consider part-time for the right candidate.

This role is hands-on and outdoors. You’ll be working with sheep, dogs, grazing contracts, yard work, and occasional haying. No two days look the same.

Preference given to applicants with livestock experience, but we’re willing to train someone who is capable, motivated, and willing to learn.

What we’re looking for:
- Reliable, honest, and able to work independently
- Strong common sense and problem-solving ability
- Comfortable around animals and outdoor work
- Physically capable (walking uneven terrain, working on your feet)
- Valid driver’s license and your own transportation

What we offer:
- Starting at $17/hour + additional compensation (travel/fieldwork)
- Flexible scheduling (goes both ways) — we’ll work around your commitments, and at times we’ll rely on you for longer stretches, balanced with time off
- Optional accommodation (camper available on-site as needed)
- A unique summer working outdoors with real responsibility and skill development

Start Date: Flexible (target May 20)

Apply by: Tuesday, April 7th at 11:59 PM
Email your cover letter and resume to: [email protected]

We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

We look forward to hearing from you.

When we kicked things off in 2014, we started with six sheep… and then, like every over-excited beginner, we tried a bit of everything else too — chickens, hens, pigs, you name it.

Fast-forward to today: we finally admitted what we already knew… we’re sheep people. Full-time. Committed. Probably beyond help.

Its been many years since we raised pigs, so it’s time to let go of the equipment that’s been patiently waiting for its “maybe someday” moment. If you know anyone raising pigs, this gear will treat them well — especially heading into winter.

Please share it around!

Get yourself started on the right track - large self feeder, two smaller self feeders and one double trough that they can't tip over. A whole bunch of heavy metal panels built out of sucker rod. Various lengths.

Selling the whole package for $3000. I'll consider parting items out if no interest in buying the works. Selling because we've focused on growing our sheep flock.
Located near Central Butte, SK.

You'll need a trailer to fit panels and big feeder. 306 seven96 seven8seven5 Thanks for looking.

We’ve had a pretty decent fall… but before we know it, the ground’s going to be white and the weather’s turning cold. ❄️

Let this little pigeon be your reminder: take the next few days to clean up the yard, hang those Christmas lights, and find whatever you swore you didn’t lose this year. (No judgment — we’ve all blamed the kids, the dog, or “wind” for things we misplaced. 😂)

And don’t wander off… we’ve got a hot, melt-in-your-mouth, home-cooked kind of deal coming — lamb packages, not pigeons. 🔥👀

Stay tuned!

🐑 Understanding the Lamb Market & Why It Matters to You

It’s been interesting watching the sheep market these last few years — prices are starting to follow the same trend as cattle, climbing steadily across the board.

Now, it’s not that producers are sitting around a table deciding prices like a board of woolly economists. What you’re seeing in farm-gate or finished lamb pricing simply reflects what’s happening in the liveweight market.

Finishing lambs into a premium product takes a lot more time, feed, and care than just hauling them to a sale or feedlot buyer. The little graph below shows the average Canadian liveweight price for 110-lb lambs over the past few years — and you can clearly see that steady climb.

⚠️ Looking Ahead

I predict there’s going to be a shortage of finished lamb across the province starting early 2026.

With these rising market prices, we’re already seeing the impact — lighter lambs in the 80-lb liveweight range are now fetching the same sale prices as what many of us would normally receive for farm-gated finished lambs.

For a lot of producers, that means it simply makes more sense to sell those lambs earlier rather than invest the extra feed, time, and effort to push them to 120 lb finished weights.

As a result, there will be less locally finished lamb available for freezers and farm-gate customers across Saskatchewan as a whole.

So for you, the consumer, this means one important thing:
👉 You’re likely going to have a hard time finding farm-gated, finished lamb in early 2026 and onward.

Think of it this way — if you snooze, you’ll lose… your lamb chops. 😉

---

✅ My Suggestion

1. Find a good producer — someone whose product you trust.

2. Secure your lamb early — don’t wait until it’s gone.

3. Stick to your commitments — if you’ve booked, follow through. Producers rely on dependable customers to make direct-marketing possible.

Ranching is a labour of love — and sometimes a test of patience, mud boots, and fencing skills. Nobody’s out here getting rich off this; if it were easy money, everyone would be doing it.

If you’re serious about filling your freezer with quality local lamb this winter, now’s the time to act.

🚛 Medicine Hat Run – Heading East! 🐑

We’re hauling a load of woolies with our 24x7 stock trailer Friday afternoon and rolling back east Friday night or Saturday morning.

If you’ve got critters, tools, materials, a quad, sled, SxS — big or small — that needs a ride back this way, shoot us a message and we’ll see what we can line up. 👍

Since the trip’s already happening, it’s a good chance to get something moved for a fair price without having to organize a full haul.

The mutton bustin’ is done, and it’s time to transport the flock.
Before we leave the village, we had to make a stop.

Grab a cup of coffee — or even something sweet.
The service there is impeccable.
It’s one that can’t be beat.
