Dottie, our booted black doe, has done a fantastic job raising this litter, including a Harlequin foster from Leena. At 7.5 weeks old, the kits are now ready to be weaned and begin the next stage of their development.
While they no longer need mom, they'll be staying with us for a few more weeks. During this time, we'll continue evaluating growth rates, overall condition, and development as they mature.
For us, this grow-out period is an important part of our breeding program. It allows us to make informed decisions when selecting future breeding stock and helps ensure that the rabbits we place into breeding homes have demonstrated the traits we value most, including strong growth and overall performance.
Only the top-performing rabbits from each litter are considered for breeding homes. By taking the time to evaluate growth and development before making those decisions, we can provide families with proven genetics that are more likely to produce fast-growing, efficient offspring of their own. In the long run, improved growth rates can mean reaching market weight sooner, reducing feed costs and potentially saving weeks of grow-out time.

We're excited to see how these kits continue to develop over the coming weeks.
