Shearing day is done!

Many people are surprised to learn that not all sheep naturally shed their wool. Some breeds will "roo," which is the natural process of loosening and shedding their fleece as the weather warms. When a sheep roos, the wool can often be gently pulled away by hand.

Some of our sheep roo their wool beautifully, making it easy to remove by hand. Others only roo partially, and some don't roo enough to shed their fleece on their own. When that happens, the wool continues to grow and can become heavy, dirty, and uncomfortable for the animal. That's why shearing is an important part of sheep care.

Today we helped those sheep out with a haircut. It's hard work, but our flock is now much more comfortable heading into the warmer months.

Sheep shearing is officially done for another year!

A few years ago, after discovering just how difficult it was to find a professional shearer willing and available to come to a small farm, we decided to teach ourselves. It wasn't something we ever expected to add to our skill set, but that's farm life. Sometimes you learn to do things yourself because there simply isn't another option.

Every year gets a little easier, although it's still a long day of hard work, sore muscles, and tumble weeds of wool. The sheep are now feeling much more comfortable heading into the warmer weather, and we're relieved to have another shearing season behind us.

Farming has a way of constantly teaching resilience, problem-solving, and self-sufficiency. We may not shear like the professionals, but the job gets done and our flock is cared for.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we're going to enjoy not wrestling sheep for the rest of the day! The farm stand has colourful farm fresh eggs in the cooler today from 10-6pm located at 605 Cumberland Point Road in Cumberland Bay.

Nothing says summer evenings quite like a crackling campfire.

We've added seasoned mixed campfire bundles, hardwood and softwood, to the Farm Stand, complete with kindling to help get your fire going. Whether you're spending the evening around the fire pit, camping, or simply enjoying a quiet night outdoors, we've got you covered.

We've also stocked our handcrafted Herbal Fire Starters, infused with cedar and lavender. Not only do they make starting your fire quick and easy, but the aromatic herbs may also help make those pesky bugs a little less welcome around the campfire.

πŸͺ΅ Seasoned mixed campfire bundles | $5 each
πŸ”₯ Herbal cedar & lavender firestarters | $1 each

Stop by the Farm Stand between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and stock up for your next campfire. As always, thank you for supporting local and helping our little farm grow, one bundle at a time.

The Farm Stand is officially ready!

The shelves may look a little sparse right now, but that's because we're just beginning to fill them with the homemade, handcrafted, and farm-produced goodness we've been working on behind the scenes. Over the coming weeks, you'll see more products arrive as they're made, harvested, gathered, and carefully stocked and more decor as we settle into our new digs!

πŸ₯š For now, we have farm-fresh eggs available for $6 per dozen, Maple Syrup, preserves, Dryer Balls, body butter, lip balms, with more items being added regularly. Every product in our stand has been chosen, created, or grown with intention, and we're excited to finally have a space where you can stop in, browse, and take a little piece of the farm home with you.

A friendly reminder that our eggs are packed in reusable plastic cartons. If you've purchased eggs from us before, we'd greatly appreciate having those cartons returned so we can continue reusing them. They're durable, protect the eggs well, and help reduce waste.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our farm and believed in the honour system. We can't wait to watch this little stand grow and become a place filled with local goodness.

It’s disappointing to even have to write this before our Farm Stand is officially open, but unfortunately we’ve already experienced theft and underpaying.

Our stand was created with the intention of a welcoming, self-serve space filled with homemade, handcrafted, and farm-grown goods for our community to enjoy. But the honour system only works when people choose to be honest.

Every item in this stand represents time, hard work, care for our animals, rising costs, and countless hours behind the scenes to make this little dream possible.

We completely understand that sometimes people may not have exact change in the moment, and if that happens, we kindly ask that you settle up the difference the next time you stop by. That honesty and integrity is what keeps small farm stands like this possible.

We also want to gently remind everyone that the stand is monitored by cameras, and we are able to identify individuals who steal or intentionally underpay. We truly hope it never comes to needing that, because our goal has always been to build something rooted in trust, community, and mutual respect.

To everyone who supports us honestly and intentionally, we thank you. You are the reason small farms and local businesses can continue to exist and grow.
