This ClimateData.ca podcast is about how we get from here to there, exploring climate adaptation across sectors, and the ways that climate data can make us more resilient as a society.

Episode 4 has just been released, and it features Alanna Carlson and Keaton Sinclair, two young farmers who decided they would build a sustainable future for themselves and their farm, and maybe even pave the way for their family and community.

We also spoke to representatives from the Canadian Centre for Climate Services and ClimateWest to get a broader view of the state of climate change and adaptation in the Prairies.

Farm Garden cover crop 😍 - *Post Planting*

I used the seeds available from the field crops to create a diverse multi-species blend. Cool season grass (durum, barley, rye), brassica (mustard), legumes (peas, lentils, chickpea). Next time I’d add a warm season grass and chenopod.

💩 Find a neighbour with loads of manure
🥣 Mix the cover crop blend in a modified pail
🍄 Coat the seeds with humic, mycorrhizal fungae and micronutrients
🌱 Broadcast and cover to plant in the garden
💦 Water or seed in the rain… and watch it grow!

To restore and cycle the nutrients in the soil, the intent is to chop and drop this cover before flowering stage. Any ideas what I should plant into it??

Last year Keaton did a final til of the garden, then we added a layer of rich manure and planted a cover crop. This year our vegetables are growing strong!

Last week we attended a conference on my birthday… not just any conference, the Sask Soil Health Conference 2025!! SaskSoil

It was a great experience meeting researchers, authors, farmers and ranchers building and working with natural ecosystems, creating more opportunities and holistic long-term growth on the land 🌎

It was very helpful to hear what works and what doesn’t, and we are looking forward to more integrations this growing season that focus on soil health. We left the conference buzzing with ideas!
