10 Simple Ways to Honour National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
1. Wear orange.
Learn why the orange shirt has become a symbol of remembering the children who were taken to residential schools.
2. Learn whose traditional territory you live on.
Take a few minutes to learn about the First Nations whose lands your community is located on.
3. Learn the meaning behind “Every Child Matters.”
Go beyond the phrase and understand the history and experiences it represents.
4. Listen to an Indigenous voice.
Read an article, listen to a podcast, watch an interview, or hear a story told by an Indigenous person.
5. Learn about a residential school in your region.
Local history can make the broader history of residential schools much more tangible.
6. Read a few of the 94 Calls to Action.
You don't have to read all 94 at once. Choose a few and learn what they are asking governments, organizations and Canadians to do.
7. Support an Indigenous-owned business or artist.
Buy directly from Indigenous makers, businesses, authors or artists when you can.
8. Attend a local event.
If your community or a nearby First Nation is hosting a public gathering, ceremony, walk or educational event, consider attending respectfully.
9. Talk about what you learned.
Share something meaningful with your family, friends or children. Reconciliation is helped when learning continues beyond September 30.
10. Choose one thing to carry forward.
Truth and reconciliation isn't something that only matters for one day. Pick one small action, such as reading more Indigenous authors, learning local history or supporting Indigenous businesses, and continue it throughout the year.
