Hello friends,

It's been a bit quiet on our end, and for good reason. Both Laura and I (Jel) have answered a call back to the Yukon. Beyond our stroopwafels, my professional career lies in EMS, and I've accepted a position with the Yukon ambulance service in Whitehorse.

This means that we, along with our pup and Boler trailer, have made the move up North.

We're not sure yet how things will evolve with the stroopwafels, but to everyone in Ontario and Quebec: thank you for your chats, support, and smiles. You brought such richness to our time there.

Stay well, stay connected. Because who knows—if you find yourself lost in the northern territories, you might just discover the comfort of a "touch of Holland" if we roll back into operation.

For now: Tot ziens!!

Dear community,
Last week a friend took me to a trail running festival for my birthday. The first film was the story of a 70-something year old man who used a chainsaw for a cane to hike up the mountain behind his home to make a trail for no other reason but to have something for others to enjoy. “You don’t do these things for yourself… but to bring people together and make a community.” Those words have stayed with me since. They’re a reflection of why we ever started this now business- back in Inuvik off a little folding table at the Arctic market- baking to build a sense of community. And that’s the joy we found at Parkdale last weekend, and what we hope to keep building in the holiday markets to come. 🧡 J&L

Dear white space,
That’s what I call days on the calendar with no agenda. I haven’t come from a place where I’ve intentionally lived this way, but over time we’ve come to value the balance that white space brings. It’s for that reason you’ve been seeing less of us at markets and we’ve been quieter as a business. Last year was a year of growth. This season is one of balance, of saying yes to less and leaving more room for trail runs and time with our pup and family. It’s a constant dance of re-evaluation of what to commit to and when we let go so we stay rooted in each other and show up to the events that we do with our full selves. So with and on the calendar this week, coming from a weekend of white space, we’re looking forward to seeing you there and serving you with smiles 🧡J&L.

Dear Rebecka,
Congratulations to you and Nick on your wedding day! You said it well that our meeting felt meant to be, and we could not agree more. We were honoured to be included in your special day and serve Oma a taste of home, surprise your Dutch family and commiserate with all those who are now with us in cheering on Spain in the World Cup since Holland is out. We hope you look back on a day of much fun and we look forward to seeing all the pictures your photographer took of feeding each other stroopwafels like it was wedding cake. 🧡J&L

Dear supporters,
We listen to a baking podcast, fittingly called Rise Up, that interviews bakers all across the globe. The other day I was listening to the most recent episode while Jel faithfully headed out in the rain to Parkdale for the evening, after what had been a beautifully sunny day turned overcast and wet. On the show they talked about market relationships as co- dependent - the market goer relying just as much on the vendor to be there for their weekly treats, as the vendor needing the weekly support. It’s been a rough start to the season, with most events being full of rain and a lot of heat and humidity. For those that still come out, and support all of us doing the small thing, thank you. You inspire us and motivate us to stay loyal no matter the weather, and remind us that the value of community trumps all. 🧡J&L

Dear Parkdale,

You’ve always been a favourite. Having moved to the area from a small community where we knew most everyone ( and their dog ) at a market by name, it was so nice to be back and see all your familiar faces. This Wednesday looks to be another beautiful summer night, so come find us at our new spot and get your cookie while we get caught up. One week is never enough to hear all about how you’ve been and what you’re looking forward to this summer. 🧡J&L

Dear down days,
Maybe it’s the grey skies, or still recovering from being off sick, or a mix of who knows what, but it leaves me wanting to curl up on the couch and burrow in blankets with tea. The last time I felt this way, this is what I came home to. For whenever you next feel the same way too, I hope you’ve got someone who cares and will give you cookies. Bonus points if it smiles back at you with sprinkles. 🧡J&L
