Meet Cricket.
Cricket is a first for me, he's a triplet. His birth was one of the hardest and scariest deliveries I've ever had to assist with. All three babies were tangled together, and as I worked to pull them, I couldn't tell what belonged to who. Cords and membranes were holding them back, and for what felt like forever I worked to get them out. To my surprise, all three were born alive.
Cricket was tiny compared to his siblings.
That same night, my big girl Blue had her babies. Unfortunately, one was born dead and another was mummified. Only one survived. Blue is one of the best moms I have, and it broke my heart when I removed the babies she had lost. She knew she had more than one. She called for them and tried talking to them.
Knowing she was still full of those strong maternal hormones, I decided to try something I'd never had much luck with before. I made Cricket smell like her babies.
To my surprise, Blue immediately started cleaning him. This tiny little goat was suddenly being loved, protected, and raised by my biggest doe.
Now, with his adopted mom, Cricket is growing like a w**d. He doesn't have to compete with two siblings for milk, and he's absolutely thriving.
He's definitely my daughter's favorite goat right now, and I can see why. ❤️
