On Emancipation Day, we remember that freedom was not simply declared. It was fought for, practised and protected.

Food can tell the stories official records leave out. Black foodways carry histories of ancestry, movement, resistance and creation.

At Yaya’s Kitchen, our culinary project traces those foodways across Africa, the Caribbean and the wider diaspora. We honour the past without allowing Black cuisine to be confined to it.

For us, Afrofuturism through food means building the future with ancestral wisdom.

We remember those who came before us—and we cook forward.
