I went out for an evening peek at the garden and I found the biggest bumble bee I've ever seen! He is fuzzy and buzzy like a bumble bee, but about an inch long! He was happily gathering pollen and docile in the evening cool air.

Ok, so these peaches were not grown at Feral Flora, but by an orchard nearby on hwy 6.

In all the years I've lived in the Okanagan, never have a I seen a U-pick Peaches sign. $2.50 per lb for Red Havens at Banga Orchard. A Super nice couple and their giant, super chill St. Bernard/border Collie X live and work there. It took me about 20 minutes to pick these!

I am stoked. I have my favorite cookbooks out. I'm making peach cobbler tonight. I'll be canning peaches to have on oatmeal in the winter. There will be jam... I'll freeze some for smoothies and baking. Ì have so much I'll probably dehydrate some too. I'm in peach heaven!

Chickens!

What fabulous creatures. They crack me up with their clamorous chorus at about 9:30 a.m. when they are laying. When I was little, my mom told me they were each saying 'clook, clook, clook, clook, what I did!!' As they all lay their eggs.

Our chickens are quite old, but they still lay a lot of eggs. We can't bring ourselves to cull them, they are a friendly and harmonious flock. We have 5 year old silkies, and various other breeds and ages. They keep the bugs at bay, and this in turn adds protein and variety to their diet while protecting the garden from too many insects.

They look half dead when they lounge in their favourite dust bath like basking sloths, so pure is their enjoyment.

One day, I'll share the story of Sammy-Short-Pants the very handsome rooster, but this post is long enough for one day.

To be continued at a later date.🐓🐔

Frog fun at Feral Flora!

This weekend there were many frogs of all shapes and sizes visiting our gardens. One has been hanging out in the overflow drain of the rain barrel. The big guy (whom Patrick has named Paul) chills out in the shade of the front garden, near the little pond. Hayden, our oldest who lives in the log cabin on the property, has a frog that sings to him from under the cabin, when he showers. He has been dubbed Pedro.

Frogs make me smile with delight and always have. Our kids seem to have the same fondness for them that I do.

If you're looking for something fun to do with with small or big kids alike, try going on a frog finding search. Super fun!

Patrick helped me pick our first green beans of the season today. We had them with supper along with zucchini. So good!

Our blueberry bushes were looking a bit anemic and yellow. My mom said this can be a sign that they want more acidity in their soil. I mixed a vinegar and water solution and poured it near the base of each plant. It worked! They greened up and are producing lots of berries.

Welcome to Feral Flora Farm's FB page. We are Jen & Bob de Bourcier, and we like to get dirty- growing flowers that is. We will only post photos from our actual farm and garden. No internet photos for us.

I have always had a garden. As I get older, the garden just gets bigger. My signature flower is definitely the dahlia, or maybe the peony. How does one choose? You get the picture. I love growing flowers, vegetables, raspberries, you name it. And I love sharing beautiful bouquets selected from this plethora of prismatic plenty.

I wouldn't be able to have a farm and garden this size if I didn't have my fabulous husband Bob standing by with shovel and equipment eager to dig in and get dirty with me. In the garden people.

I am super excited to be sharing our Feral Flora with others. We have a w**d and insect friendly garden. No sterile perfection for us! Mice, moles and deer are welcome too, but outside the garden perimeter, thank you for your cooperation feral fauna.

I will put up photos of our garden, goats, chickens, creek, bouquets and garden bounty from previous years to get us started. I will also begin posting current pics so folks can watch the garden grow with us and to share the seasonally influenced bouquets that emerge from its green depths.

If you ever want a bouquet, pm me for a custom order. My bouquets will also be sold regularly throughout the season at the Monashee Co op in Lumby.
