Calgary Stampede’s International Year of the Woman Farmer

Women have always been essential to agriculture - what is shifting now is the visibility. Being a woman in ag today means I get to walk the path that others are watching, and maybe make it a little easier for the woman coming behind me.

I’m so grateful to be among the Calgary Stampede’s IYWF2026 showcase. Thank you Stampede Ag & Western Events for sharing our stories.

“Weren’t you scared?” is one of the most common questions I’m asked.

And, undoubtedly, the answer is yes.

Yes, I was scared to drive a lawnmower.
Yes, I was scared to start a podcast.
Yes, I was scared to speak on stage.

I did it scared.

I did it scared enough times to start wondering what else I could do scared.

And it turns out, I can do a lot of cool s**t.

I started white knuckling on lawnmower ended up in the combine all harvest long. I started with a google search of ‘how to start a podcast’ and have over a million downloads of . I had a boss tell me I belonged behind the scenes and now I’m on stage telling my story.

Courage comes before confidence. If we don’t do it scared, we might not end up where we’re meant to be.

Tell me in the comments what’s something that you’ve done scared.

I wore many hats, drove many objects with 4 wheels, and drank many coffees this week.

Thanks again to the crew for having me to present at your amazing group in Regina, SK 🌾

One of the greatest gifts you can give someone is your story.

Thank you to the amazing women of Peace Country for allowing me to share mine with you and giving me yours. It’s truly just what I needed.

Thank you to the amazing Northern Rural Chicks for including me in another successful Women’s Day.

“You look happy there”

That’s what Baba said to me while we watched the pictures of our family roll across the picture frame while we sat in her room after I helped feed her lunch. This was our time together for ten months last year.

She saw my smile in my bountiful garden, similar to the same one she had in hers here. The hydrangeas in my yard that once were hers grew to the size of dinner plates, the biggest they’ve been in my almost nine years on the farm.

She didn’t know at the time my garden wasn’t planted or my to-do list was growing longer by the minute. And, for those couple hours during the afternoons with Baba I forgot about all those things too.

The matriarch to my husband’s family farm, our beautiful Baba, passed away at the end of October at the age of 98 years old.

I miss her and our time together.

The weather is starting to feel more like spring and I can feel her with me as I dream of what to grow. She will always be with me, in the garden.

Check out my latest article for Progressive Dairy-Canada where I talk about why I started sharing my voice in Ag and how you can get started.

My new life on the farm was an adjustment not only for me, but for the people around me. Sharing my journey helped bridge that gap. What began as updates for friends and family slowly grew into a way of building understanding for people both inside and outside the agriculture industry.

The young farmers of Nova Scotia know how to make a prairie gal feel real welcome! 🦞

THANK YOU for your kindness and hospitality. I had the BEST time at the Cultivate Your Future Conference in Truro, Nova Scotia.

The highlights are, but definitely not limited to:

- meeting the amazing women I’ve interviewed on and had friendships with on the internets for YEARS in real life (no photos taken & .purdy_ means we’re the real deal)
- making new friends & learning all about eastern Ag
- sort of seeing a lighthouse
- eating and drinking local
- receiving the cutest most thoughtful gift for Kevin and Carl 🥹
- and last but NOT least, the traditional east coast entertainment

This was my first time on the east coast of Canada and it definitely won’t be my last!
