𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗲
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀

From Germany to Nova Scotia, Christiane Teerling and her family brought a lifetime of experience across an ocean and built a place where farming, wilderness and hospitality belong together.

𝗧𝘄𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀. 𝗔 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.

In March 2020, Christiane arrived with decades of entrepreneurial experience, machinery, an entire household, a horse and a clear vision of how she wanted to live and work.

The world was coming to a standstill. Building Lindsay Lake Farms required daily decisions, substantial investment and the determination to keep moving through uncertainty.

Together with her husband, Jan, she shaped a diverse operation where farming, forestry, good food and hospitality work side by side.

Bison graze in the pastures. Clydesdales add their presence. Wild blueberries grow on the farm. Cottages and woodland trails invite guests to stay and explore. Each element brings its own demands, and Christiane helps hold the larger vision together.

𝗔𝗻 𝗲𝘆𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆. 𝗔 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

She notices the atmosphere of a room, a thoughtfully laid table, the light between old trees. She also handles invoices, repairs, staffing concerns and the difficult conversations needed to explain how these different parts fit into one business.

That combination shapes her leadership: practical, personal and committed to protecting the sense of welcome that makes Lindsay Lake Farms distinctive.

Today, her work includes establishing Lindsay Lake Farms place on the tourism map and helping others recognise what has been built here.

Her journey continues with a question familiar to many entrepreneurs:

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆.

While travelling through Atlanta, we visited Ted’s Montana Grill, a place closely connected to Ted Turner’s remarkable bison story.

We did not go simply to eat. We went because it is always worth seeing how others have brought together land, food and a larger idea. Sitting there, I found myself thinking about Lindsay Lake Farms.

Our story is very different. It belongs to Nova Scotia, to our landscape, our bison and the experiences we are slowly creating around them. But seeing what others have built reminds us that meaningful ideas often begin quietly, with a conviction that something deserves to be protected, shared and given a future.

We return home with inspiration, not imitation.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿.

September is neither quite summer nor fully autumn. It is the season between gathering and preparing.

Blueberries are stored away. Honey is poured into jars. Firewood begins to stack up. The evenings become cooler, and the animals seem to notice the changing light before we do.

None of this happens because we need something to post.

It happens because the land and the season ask it of us.

Perhaps that is one of the quiet luxuries of farm life: remembering that time was once measured by what was ripening, what needed tending and what had to be made ready before winter.

I cannot find magic in bureaucracy!

I have tried - honestly tried - to appreciate the administrative side of my work.

I understand why rules, permits, forms and procedures exist. I know that responsibility requires a certain amount of structure.

But no matter how hard I try, nothing in me comes alive while filling out another form, answering another question or following up on another process.

In the forest or just in nature, it is different.

There, I find wonder in ancient moss, in the sun rising, rainwater running between the trees, tiny fungi emerging from the earth and the feeling that everything around me is alive. Nature fills me with awe, joy and curiosity. It feels like stepping into another dimension.

And it makes me wonder:

When did we decide that everything we can document, regulate and measure is important, while everything we can only feel became optional?

When did wonder become something we may enjoy only after the “real work” is finished?

Perhaps some people genuinely find comfort and satisfaction in systems and procedures. I respect that. But I cannot force myself to find meaning where I feel none.

I cannot find magic in bureaucracy.

And perhaps I am not meant to.

Perhaps my task is not to teach myself to love bureaucracy, but to prevent it from consuming the part of me that can still recognize magic at all.

Maybe that is also why Lindsay Lake Farms has developed in the direction it has. Perhaps, without fully realizing it at first, we were creating a counterpoint - a place where life, beauty, nature and wonder are not treated as an afterthought.

A place that does not deny responsibility, but refuses to let administration become the meaning of life.

Rules should serve life. Life should not disappear into rules.

Perhaps we never truly stopped believing in magic, we simply became too busy managing life to notice that it was happening.

So let’s remember the magic!
