Being able to watch something natural happen with no intervention is a beautiful thing. We found this broody hen sitting on 14 eggs outside and decided to let her be. If you move a hen who wants to sit on eggs, she will likely just find a new spot to lay a clutch of eggs and give it a go. We watched her over a few weeks and had a surprise this Saturday morning to find 11 fluffy chicks under her! We moved her and her children to a safe space, away from the other chickens so she can have her time to raise these new babies. We get little sneak peaks from time to time.

The summer batch of broiler chickens have adapted quickly to grazing on pasture. They are loving the grasshoppers, crickets and greens. In addition to the 120 white Cornish cross chicks, we have five black copper and one blue copper maran chicks growing along side them. Marans are a bigger bodied duel purpose chicken (meat and eggs) and lay very dark brown coloured eggs. These six chicks were hatched from a clutch of eggs we found in the horse pasture that were transferred to the incubator. We will keep the maran hens and add them to our layer flock.

Canning season has begun. With my pickles stock still in decent shape, I have focused my energy on making a lesser known favourite, sweet baby corns. They require a lot of time picking and husking the cobs before canning. These jars have at least 25 sweet baby cobs, the perfect addition for summer lunches.

The cucumbers will be coming to an end soon, so I have made sure to make some jars of sweet relish as well.

If anyone is craving a different pickle, let me know now, and I will likely make a batch before the cucs are done.

Turkey talk

One of my favourite things about turkeys is listening to all of their interesting sounds. They are extremely social and have excellent hearing. Whether its an alarm call to warn others of danger or a soft purr to signal content and safety, their vocalizations extend far beyond gobbling.
