Between one half and three quarters of all living beings in an ecosystem are underground. Fungi and microbes feed the vine, structure the soil, store water and carbon, and quietly sustain all life on earth.

Few people make this invisible life as compelling as Marc-André Selosse. A rare mind, and a fascinating conversation.

In this episode of The Wine Resistance, scientist, mycologist and ecologist Marc-André Selosse offers a new perspective on terroir by exploring the invisible...

How often do you eat alone? Do you see social rituals disappearing around you? 🤔

The photo quote is taken from depressing but important article, "The Anti-Social Century" refers to eating shared meals, but more broadly to how everyday social life has quietly eroded.

Author explains how dining with others, social gatherings, and public spaces that once created easy human contact have been replaced by home delivery, screens, and increasingly solitary habits.

🍷 Of course, I naturally see the parallels in declining wine consumption. Wine historically lived at the table, lubricating meals and conversation...not as something to sip alone under the solitary blue gaze of the television.

This picture was taken during our episode with Chinon winemaker, Nicolas Grosbois. He was reminiscing about daily gatherings in his childhood farming village, around his mother's table, trading stories and sharing advice over a hearty meal and glasses of wine.

Is technology to blame? Will we find our way back to communal living?

I sit down with Jonathan Gebser to talk about Italian wine...from the brink of ruin to a movement that championed a quality awakening.

Over a delicious lunch .restaurant , Jonathan shared tales of small growers in Sardinia pruning neighbours' vineyards to help them through tough times, to a cooperative in Tuscany's Lucca hills helping disadvantaged youths to thrive in viticulture, Jonathan shares exciting stories from across the country.

What does “fair price” really mean in wine? 🤔

And who, ultimately, should carry the cost of growing grapes responsibly in an increasingly challenging marketplace?

Some context for my musings...

In 1980s Italy, large swathes of the wine sector were locked into a brutal equation: sell more, for less. Supermarkets dictated prices. Demand was high. Growers were desperate.

Into this powder keg, came a group of unscrupulous individuals illegally marketing methanol as a cheap way to boost alcohol. Toxic wines flooded the market leading to illness, blindings, and even fatalities.

What happened was unthinkable, but why it became possible unsettles me more.

Fast forward to today.
Many growers around the world are still being squeezed to the brink. Prices that barely cover costs, if at all. Endless hours of manual work. Rising labour and energy costs. Constant threat of frost, hail, drought, floods. Markets that fluctuate faster than vineyards ever can.

Situations like the methanol scandal serve as warnings. They show what can happen when an agricultural product rooted in land, time, and care is forced into a purely industrial logic.

🎬 In the next episode of we catch up with Slow Wine's Jonathan Gebser.

He tells us how hitting rock bottom saved Italian wine, and why today, more than ever, producers that make "good, clean, and fair" wines need our support! Episode drops Feb. 2nd. Don't miss it!

People are gathering less around a table and a shared bottle of wine. 🍷

An 8,000 year old tradition that has long shaped meals and human connection is slowly slipping out of everyday life.

With climate extremes and economic pressures mounting, the livelihoods of millions of growers & winemakers around the world is at risk. 🍇

And yet, across its long history there have always been periods of strife. Wine has endured because its makers refused to give up. They adapted, protected their land, supported one another and kept going through every crisis. 💪

We exist to tell their stories: around a table, with food and wine, enjoyed in moderation, the way it was always meant to be consumed.

It’s a show, but also a growing community for people who care about wine’s future. Not wine geek culture. Not drinking culture. Real human stories of work, failure, passion, resilience and care for the land.
