NEW RESOURCE!

The National Farmers Union of Ontario (NFU-O) is pleased to share that the ‘Public Land for the Public Good’ guide is now available!

This guide draws on research and interviews from farmers, public landholders and partner organizations or businesses who are lighting the way for diversified farm leases on public land. It aims to outline best practices and leasing standards for public landholders looking to further develop their agricultural leasing programs in a way that emphasizes food sovereignty, sustainable practices, and resilient localized food systems.

Each section of this guide illustrates key considerations when building out a public land leasing program in Ontario that supports diversified farm practices. The sections cover topics like new plot development, determining rental cost, soil & environmental health, equity and non-discrimination, setting lease lengths, infrastructure and maintenance, landholder and tenant relations, and housing.

🍂 Our Native Plant Sale begins THIS SUNDAY, September 27 - 10:00 - 4:00pm ! 🌱

We’re not quite ready to stop planting or to stop spending time in the garden! There is a season for everything, and fall has its own special magic.

Some say fall can be one of the best times to plant. As cooler temperatures arrive, plants begin shifting their energy below the surface, encouraging their roots to grow deep and wide. Autumn rains and cooler weather help keep the soil moist and reduce transplant stress, giving newly planted natives a gentle opportunity to settle in before winter.

Come spring, they’ll already have a head start. 🌿

Native plants are wonderfully adapted to our local climate and soils. Once established, they often require less water, fertilizer, and maintenance, while providing essential food and habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Planting natives is a beautiful way to support biodiversity and bring more life into our own gardens and landscapes.

Winter doesn’t mean the garden ends - it simply asks us to grow differently. 🌿❄️

✨🌱Your Year Round Gardening Series is just around the Corner! 🌱✨

With the coolness returning to the air and the last summer harvests filling our baskets, we might be tempted to put away our garden gloves and call it a season.

But wait… not so fast!

This fall, Hélène is coming to the farm to show us another way: seeing the garden not as something that ends with summer, but as a living cycle of abundance, nourishment, learning, and possibility all year long.

With a wealth of knowledge, experience, and a deep passion for growing, Hélène will guide us through three hands-on workshops designed to help us keep our gardens alive and productive long after the summer sun fades.

🥗❄September 27 - Winter Greens Under Snow
Discover the leafy greens, root crops, herbs, and other resilient plants that can survive — and even thrive — through an Ottawa winter.

🥕October 18 - Protecting Your Fall Garden with Low Tunnels
Learn how simple, affordable structures can protect your crops from frost and extend your harvest weeks — or even months — beyond the first freeze.

🤸‍♀️November 15 - Boost Your Immune System with Year-Round Gardening
Explore how growing, preserving, and eating nutrient-dense food throughout the seasons can nourish us through the winter.

Whether you've been curious, have given it a try in the past, or this is all completely new to you; these workshops are an invitation to keep the joy growing, keep the knowledge growing, and keep the abundance flowing — all year long.
We can't wait to welcome Hélène to the farm and share this beautiful continuation of the growing season with you.
