It’s world bicycle day today! I feel so privileged to be able to take the little one to daycare on the bike path along the Rideau river and stop to say hi to baby geese.

The freedom of riding a cycle on a car-free road is the ultimate flex. And just listen to all those birds chirping, it really just brings so much joy to my daily routine.

Let’s bike to work and beyond Ottawa!

Plant people, need your help!

This pothos is a few years old and I never realized how long one of the stems had become. We just kept looping it over the hanging pot so that it would be out of reach from our toddler!

What do you suggest I do? I prefer seeing a “fuller” plant rather than this green rapunzel.

Behind the scenes of where we make our worm farms - right here in Casselman, Ontario - made by Groupe Convex, a social enterprise that hires people with disabilities.

Denis, the shop manager has created a manufacturing process that involves 9 individuals - all doing the chopping, sanding, assembling, attaching mesh, and putting parts together.

Manufacturing with disabled people is totally different. Not focused on cost, speed and efficiency but instead on responsibility, team work, safety and fun!

We are so blessed to have this partnership with them and grateful to their team for every box they make!

We're excited to announce that Parkdale market will be making great compost with the help of two worm benches we are setting up in the market!

The worm benches will be fed fruit and veggie scraps from the market vendors, and the resulting worm castings will be used to feed the plants in the garden, the pollinator patch managed by the community, and the really big trees that are in the park.
The benches will also serve as a literal space to sit down and talk about composting. Stay tuned for future programming. Thanks Tina for making this possible..

This project is possible thanks to the support from a microgrant by - composting is a climate solution, preventing GHGs from landfill, and sequestering carbon in the soil via microbes! They get it.

The Worminators from Immaculata High School are a social enterprise on vermicomposting with 12 student volunteers who worked on product, pricing, branding, and market setup! Thanks to the SEP program at the OCSB for enabling these changemakers..

I’m so proud to mentor these students the past couple of years and watch them grow in confidence as well as nerd out about composting and soil health!

Have we talked about the Worminators yet? They’re a student run business out of Immaculata High School and they love worms! It’s been a pleasure to mentor these kids on vermicomposting and watch their team grow from 4 last year to 12 this year.

I heard that some Worminators joined the entrepreneurship club to make friends, and some wanted to learn how to communicate better! They’re quite good at pitching now btw, y’all should hear them sometime.

Shoutout to Miss Adele who keeps the squad motivated, and for Carrie and Richard at the SEP program at the ottcatholicsb for enabling such a wonderful entrepreneurial endeavour! These kids have raised thousands of dollars for Ottawa charities this year btw..

I noticed gardeners struggling with their black plastic compost bins… so I designed something that works better and is more functional!

Introducing the Bench of Life - a cedar garden bench that turns food scraps into rich compost using worms 🪱

It looks beautiful in the garden, makes composting way easier, and can be fed all kinds of food scraps, leaves, grass clippings, and . Plus, I personally help you get set up and support you along the way (yes, I’m the worm guy 😂).

Built locally in Ottawa from sturdy cedar by a woodshop that hires people with disabilities, this worm bench is an investment for the years.

Dimensions - 6 ft wide, 1.5 ft tall, 1.5 ft deep.
Two options are available -
#1 with integrated planters on either side (4ft of composting space)
#2 with a flat lid and 6 ft of composting space

It includes delivery, worms, set up and a mini workshop on best practices.
