What beautiful weather we had yesterday for our Happy Herd here at Ursa Farm !
Sharon led our continued spring art class, bringing watercolour seeds to life with pastel and oil technique. We continued this imaginative exercise outside with with practical work. Where the older group dug manure with Justin to fill the garden beds that we had built last fall. While the younger group planted seeds with me in mini greenhouse-like containers. Our goal is to experience as much if the full process of creation and learning, from soil to seeds, harvesting to cooking food for us all to enjoy. The cosmic element of growing nourishing food is also evident in our art and soon our practical work as well (this is biodynamic farming).
We enjoyed some forestry work and they created an imaginative game with villagers and robbers, quite impressive how they are able to determine their own laws together. Perhaps some politicians could learn from them?! Free play in a group is an excellent lesson in social studies, even for kids right up into adolescence. It is unfortunate to see this not recognized as a necessary and healthy part of child development in our modern society. It sets the stage for learning to be collaborative adults and actively participate in local communities later in life.
We practiced some fire starting. Where some children who used to be new to it, are now moving on to teaching the new group members. Teaching others is another step in learning for ourselves. Games of course are always a highlight for this group, and we added some colour to our knitting needles project. Next week we will finish them, and the following session we will learn knitting.
Next week is our last day, then we have a two week break before the next session.
If you’re interested in registering, please see our website below. We have space in the Wee Flock (4-6 yrs) and Happy Herd (7-14 yrs) groups.
