Anna: Humming birds have arrived in Nova Scotia today. Have you spotted any where you live? Directions for making safe hummingbird food: Mix 1 part refined white sugar with 4 parts water (for example, 1 cup of sugar with 4 cups of water) until the sugar is dissolved. Do not add red dye.
Fill your hummingbird feeders with the sugar water and place outside. Extra sugar water can be stored in a refrigerator. Change feeders every other day and thoroughly clean them each time to prevent harmful mold growth.

Beautiful day and the first one of the season decided to make an appearance! 😁

PURPLE CONEFLOWER (Echinacea)! We love having these flowers in our flower beds and the pollinators love it too (as you can see in our pics). πŸ₯° It can be used in teas and supplements for it's medicinal properties, but we love their tall, vibrant blooms, through summer and fall. They are perennial and prefer full sun, but do great in partial shade too. You can sow them indoors in early May and prepare to transplant within 20-30 days πŸ’š.

We have had the pleasure of seeing these Arctic visitors for the last few days. If you look up and see a group of birds flying overhead in the winter with mostly white plumage, it's probably a Snow Bunting!❄️. They fly in large groups called "drifts" and when they go to land, they look like falling snowflakes! They're only here for a short time and will be gone by spring! So happy they stopped by πŸ’™πŸ™‚

Planting depth is one of the easiest ways to improve germination. Too deep = seeds may never reach the surface. Too shallow = they dry out fast. πŸ’§

Simple rule of thumb: plant most seeds about 2–3x as deep as the seed is wide. Quick tips:
β€’ After sowing, gently press the soil so seeds touch moisture (don’t pack hard)
β€’ Keep the top layer evenly damp until sprouts appear
β€’ Always check your seed packet if it differs from a chart, packets win βœ…

If your seeds aren’t popping, depth is one of the first things to adjust next try 🌱
