Spring is always a busy time on the farm! We're taking care of the first lambs and their mamas right now, with more due at the end of April!

We've been practicing sheep herding with Mokie the Border Collie, and he's come a long way!

Mokie is learning to move sheep without force or biting. Once he gets the hang of it in this pen, we'll move into the field where he'll help us move the sheep daily for their milking and rotations this spring. We've got more training to do, but Mokie is a keen student :)

From a fellow shepherd and what it's like raising sheep, the slow and steady way.

I am a fast person. I walk fast, talk fast, I eat fast, I think way to fast. I’ve never been diagnosed as such, but I’m pretty sure I’m technically hyperactive.

Sheep do not appreciate fast. Fast means a predator is nearby and we must flee.

Sheep have forced me to slow down, breathe deeply, and learn better self awareness and regulation.

To care for sheep, I must embrace the slow. And as I do so, I find I am a more peaceful, well rounded person.

Sheep also produce slow fashion. All sheep are hand shorn. So every ball of every yarn containing wool had a human shear that wool. It cannot be outsourced to machines.

Spinning is slow and rhythmic. Knitting, spinning and weaving is the same. I have discovered that following a pattern and seeing the resulting garment is another form of self regulating that helps my brain calm down. I process emotions better when spinning or knitting.

Sheep meat likes being cooked low and slow. Sheep cheese wants handled gently in the cheese pot and slowly transformed from milk into cheese. The most popular sheep cheese - manchengo - needs aged slowly over almost a year.

So if one includes sheep or their products in one’s life, then slow will somehow be embraced. In our hurry up world… that’s a good thing.

Meet Mokie: a Border Collie puppy training to become a sheepdog.

His herding instinct is strong and he comes from good lines, but he still gets too excited to move the sheep on his own.

We're all learning this herding thing together!
