K'awat'si Shellfish Company

K'awat'si Shellfish Company Grown on the remote west coast and traditional territory of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations. It has remained pristine and unchanged for thousands of years.

KEDC was created in 2014 by the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations to capitalize on a strong desire within their community to grow economic opportunities. The Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw are a strong people with a rich history and a bright future who are creating, operating and supporting businesses that are profitable, environmentally sustainable and culturally significant. Grown on the remote west coast, in the pristine waters and traditional territory of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nation, k’awat’si Shellfish introduces the k’awat’si Scallop and the GwiGwi Oyster. These are the Cold Water Treasures of British Columbia’s south central coast and Great Bear Rainforest region. Our growing site is known to the local Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw people for its abundance of seafood resources. Continuing our Indigenous seafood tradition, our shellfish are cultured in deep-water trays and are hand-harvested by a new generation of Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw. We are committed to producing shellfish that are of the highest quality and the premium choice for sustainable seafood. Members of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw are proud to raise such high quality BC shellfish and proud to supply them to discerning restaurants around the province. Gwi Gwi Oysters were such a hit at Filomi Days that were sold out by 3:00 PM on Sunday! 🦪

One oyster lover even ordered 150 oysters, and finished them all! We already knew our oysters were good, but this definitely proved it.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and enjoyed Gwi Gwi with us! Share your GWI GWI moment with us in the comments below!

A huge thanks to our amazing team at the Oyster Bar for bringing the energy (and the oysters!) and to everyone who stopped by to enjoy our fresh Gwigwi oysters, cold drinks from the Beer Garden, and good vibes all around. 🦪🍻

From the shuckers behind the grill to the smiles in the parade — we felt the love and community spirit every step of the way.

We are proud to announce that our Gwi-Gwi Oysters were in a recent Food Day Canada video!

Rooted in Indigenous leadership, these oysters showcase not only our commitment to cultural stewardship and community well-being but also our dedication to sustainable aquaculture practices.

From careful harvesting methods to traditional stewardship principles, each Gwi-Gwi Oyster represents an investment in long-term food security, environmental responsibility, and preserving our cultural heritage. As we continue to bring ocean-fresh, ethically sourced shellfish from tide to table, we look forward to supporting healthier communities, resilient ecosystems, and inspiring others to embrace sustainability.
