🪱 The second new worm composter is finished and ready for worms! The design is the same as the first, and it came together better and faster. I was also able to incorporate more reclaimed materials, which always makes me happy. ♻ About 50 pounds of food scraps have already gone into the first composter. 🥕

❗Big announcement❗ I'm excited to share the new worm composter I built, which will live at the Maker Station (). 🪱🌿🪱

My stacking tray-style worm composters are great at the home scale, but big trays are hard to lift when they're full of damp compost. For months, I've been wanting to move from a vertical system to a horizontal system. I also just completed a college Pipe Trade Foundations (plumbing/pipe fitting) course and wanted to incorporate some of my learnings into the drainage system for this unit.

Huge thanks to the Maker Collective for providing space, equipment and allowing me to build this while I work for them this summer! Thank you also to the UNBC green fund, which covered the material costs and contributed to my wage for the build. I'll be starting on a second composter ASAP.

In the coming weeks, I will also be sifting finished worm compost from my old composting system, so stay tuned if you're looking to give your garden a boost. :)

The Worm Party was hosted at the Maker Station, marking our final workshop of the year, complete with trivia, prizes and a worm-themed cake!

So many people came out to celebrate, learn about vermicomposting, and even take home their very own red wigglers as new “pets.” The enthusiasm and community spirit were incredible!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this project such a fun, wiggly success. Here’s to more worm composting magic in the new year! Stay tuned. 🪱✨🌎
