Accepting separation and divorce takes time, and I believe that journey is different for everyone. Sometimes, in the beginning, we have no choice but to be strong, and we convince ourselves that we have accepted what happened. But the reality is often something else. Time, and the different things life brings our way, reveal just how deeply we have truly accepted and let go.
At least for me, I feel like acceptance is happening in layers. Every time I thought I had finally reached a place of complete acceptance, something would happen that made me feel angry or sad all over again. But perhaps that, too, is part of the process to allow ourselves to feel without denying our emotions, and then, eventually, let them go.
Every day, I’m learning a little more to enjoy spending time with myself, to live for myself, and to focus more on who I am and who I’m becoming.
On Friday, for the second time since my separation, I went to a wedding alone. For some, going to a wedding alone may not seem like a big deal, but for me, it was filled with so many different emotions. There were moments when I felt so much love and happiness that all I wanted to do was smile and dance. And there were moments when I found myself in tears, without even realizing it. Sometimes, witnessing love while having just walked away from a relationship can become a mirror, a reflection of everything you’ve been through.
But this time, somewhere in the middle of all those emotions, I felt a little more at peace. I realized that acceptance doesn’t mean I will never feel sad or miss what once was. Acceptance means being able to see and experience all of those emotions, and still choose to keep moving forward.
Maybe this is one of the signs of letting go: being able to go somewhere alone, to feel, to cry, to laugh, to dance, and in the end, to genuinely enjoy your own company.
In the end, time is the best healer. We just need to keep our eyes and hearts open, and pay attention to the signs life places in our path. Maybe the answers to many of our questions are hidden within those very signs. 🤍
