🍄 We have PINNING!!! Look at just how tiny these little fungi are in the last photo! 🍄

Our 1st Blue Oyster Mushroom bucket looks like it will be exploding with mushrooms this week. Yippy! 😋

The process:

1) We selected & ordered the culture from and waited for their arrival...

2) Put in the fridge until we had time on March 24th to get them set up in their new home, the 5 gallon food safe bucket 🪣

3) Carefully introduced 2 bags of sawdust mushroom culture into 3 buckets with a mixture of sanitized hardwood chips & soymeal.

4) We waited 6 weeks until the culture had spread across the top layer just under the lid before drilling the holes in the 1st bucket then waited a week for the 2nd, and again a week for the 3rd bucket.

5) Followed by 3.5 weeks so far of meticulously spraying each hole with two squirts, twice a day, along with monitoring and controlling the moisture, temperature and fresh airflow in the room they are kept in.

6) Smile! 😁 We have mushrooms growing!!!

Just wanted to share that this Saturday, May 23rd we won't be set-up at the Tata Farmers Market and will see you all the following weekend.

Opa & Omi are visiting so we will take advantage of their helping hands to get some projects done around the farm. Like, getting this tractor out of reverse 😅 and building some more stuff!

Also, have you seen these Sunsets the last few nights!? In awe!

Post Farmers Market walk yesterday as a family along the Trans Canada Trail on a beautiful May long weekend.

Nice to take a moment to decompress, breathe in the fresh air and admire where we live.

As of May 3rd, we've been living on our farm along Nova Scotia's North Shore for a full year! Cannot believe it!

Victoria Day weekend = the market is officially back outside! The market is in full summer mode, which means more vendors, more space, and more excuses to wander around. Live music by Drew Polegato will be filling the air so you can shop with those amazing vibes you love. The petting zoo is back too, because nothing says summer market like making eye contact with a donkey while you purchase your groceries 🫏🫜

It may not look like much but we have grass growing on our pasture!

When we first purchased this property in early spring of '24, the field that was once used for grazing cattle, was being taken over by "Common Buckthorn". An invasive species that grows fast, produces berries that are a delightful meal for a bird, but has a laxative effect to speed up spreading its seed. It's known to be a toxic berry to humans, most likely for its "gotta go 💩" effect on our digestive track too. Common Buckthorn also changes the pH of the soil over time to become a more acidic environment killing out its competitors.

So to restore the field, instead of using chemical herbicides we took the long route...

We took soil samples and got it bush hogged in August of '24 and had it subsoiled to slice the root system up and spread Lime to raise the pH, over wintered it, then in spring of '25 it got plowed over so any new growth would be less likely to survive. Then the rain came and it wasn't until the beginning of June when it got disked, then rolled to even out the ground again for pasture, and finally seeded.

Thanks to Ryan's dad, an Agrologist by profession, he helped create a seed blend with us: Timothy grass, Perennial Ryegrass, Creeping Red Fescue, Brome grass, Orchard grass, Trefoil legume, Ladino Clover legume and Yarrow for the bees 🐝

Just our luck though, the extreme heat came by the third week of June and nothing but the clover 🍀 grew. Which now when we look back was actually a blessing in disguise. The clover began its work fixing nitrogen in the soil and helped create a canopy over the ground which protected the soil from getting scorched by the sun all summer and those little grass seeds hid away until this spring!

Nearly two years in the making and we will still wait to let it take root and make a good base before any 4-legged hoofed animals begin grazing on this land again!
