You've already met me in a previous post all about me, today it's about us. Yes it's Wednesday afternoon and we're all hanging out in the barn because it's raining again. We're quite comfortable in here. We can go in and out as we please and we do love it outside but in here we're extra comfortable. You see the bedding pack in a clay based pack so no concrete which makes it way easier on our feet and legs and the farmer always has nice deep straw for us to sleep on and stay dry. Dry is key to keeping a healthy udder. And the barn is comfortable too, it's called a "cold" barn which means it has no heating system. The ceiling is insulated and the walls are not. It has curtains that run automatically to help regulate temperature and chimneys to facilitate natural air flow, there's no need for fans or forced air, making the barn nice and quiet all the time. We spend quite a bit of time in here, in fact I've heard the farmer call us "Princesses". When it's hot, we come inside. When it's windy, we come inside. When it rains...inside again, snow, of course we come in. When the bugs are bothering us, we come inside. A drink of water....way better inside than at the trough outside. So you see we've got it pretty good, "made in the shade", I could say.

How about that rain! That's what everyone's talking about but for me, it's my new little bull calf, ain't he sweet? He's an angus cross. He's full of energy, I love to watch him buck and play. These 4 1/2 inches of rain sure brought out the green grass, it's all the buzz in the barn, sounds like we'll be heading out to grass soon, some of the heifers already are, I'm looking forward to it. But I, along with the other fresh cows, will have to wait a little longer than the rest of the herd as we are nursing calves and we go out on a different paddock that's not quite ready for us yet. Nevertheless grass season is finally here!!

Hi Everyone, sorry for the late post, it's seeding time and things get a little crazy here.

Hi my name is Moo-Lait Sugarhigh Peppy.
But everyone calls me Wonky!

Yes, you read right, it's Wonky, they call me that after the Wonky Donkey. Have you ever heard of him, he's famous, there's a childrens book about him and even a song! Anyway, I get the nickname because all the humans here say that I look like him. Actually I really do. It's uncanny. Maybe it's the way I stand with my front legs slighlty crossed or my long face or maybe even my big ears. But just to be clear I do have 2 eyes and 4 legs. I'm not offended at all, I mean who doesn't like looking like someone famous. After all he's a spunky, hanky-panky, cranky, stinky-dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky, wonky donkey.

Nice to be featured, finally, I suppose that might be a little bit of my fault, you see, I'm very pretty and really quiet but I don't like to be told what to do..... so standing still for a picture has been a "chore" for the chore girl taking pictures. But I finally gave in today. I'm generally pretty easy going as long as what I'm doing is my idea......I get my stubborn streak from my sire's side of the family. I'm a holstein and jersey cross. He's a jersey, and though we've never met him it's safe to say that it comes from him because being stubborn is definitely a jersey thing. The chore girl even got a picture of me sneaking some extra hay off the unroller, another little thing I like to do, my idea of course.

When the farmer's wife asked the girls what they should post about me they said, " She's really tall and an airhead" and if I'm honest they're right, I'm a little bit of an airhead but it's totally fine because God made me that way! Tall, yes, and they also added that I'm sweet! I come from a lineage of tall cows, my mom, (actually the right word for mom in the cow world is dam), my dam, Kass, is really tall and my grand-dam, Kidleigh, is a big girl. She's both, tall and large. They're both still on the milking line so I get to be and work with them everyday. I'm expecting a calf in September, I'll be going into my dry period at the end of July. I'm looking forward to having all of August and most of September off. My calf will be much smaller than us because it's sire is Laitjoie Lightning, he's a jersey. We're hoping it's a heifer. It surely won't be like us in size and it will likely have very different markings, but if it's a heifer it's sure to have a "K" name, Kandy, Kisses?

Hey, it's me again, Pepsi. You caught me with my mouth full, well I'm not the only one. Everyday, twice a day before milking, the farmer feeds us long stem hay. We come to the feed bunk as soon as we hear the tractor, we love our hay. The hay helps us with our digestion by creating a fiber mat in our rumens and promotes healthy rumen function. Our rumens are big fermentation vats where the biology do all the work of digesting. When we eat long stem hay we create a lot of saliva which acts as a buffer. After milking we get the rest of our diet, it's a high energy ration with lots of short stem forages in it and grain. The buffer that was created before milking helps stabilize the ph in my rumen from acid spikes caused by the high energy feed which in turn protects my rumens good bacteria. Healthy rumens make happy, healthy cows and happy, healthy cows make good milk.

Yup that's me, so sweet and so curious and usually up to no good! I'm a first lactation jersey. Most jerseys are small, especially as first lactation heifers but I'm especially small. I've been small all my life. I had a little bit of a rough start to my lactation as my calf was a stillborn. It took a little bit for me to get into the swing of things and now I'm loving my job. The farmer says that jersey heifers are the hardest to train in the parlor because the stalls are sized for full grown holstein cows so we have lots of room to squirm around and kick if we want. Not me, well.... ok, a little but it didn't take long before I was trained. My curious nature gets me into a lot of trouble and my small size makes it easy to get into places I shouldn't be but the farmer says that my good behavior in the parlor makes up for it. Besides who could stay angry at these eyes...

I'm the new cow on the milking line, heifer to be exact, this is my first calf. She's a little heifer too. She's sooo sweet. Charlie has named her Domino. That's not really very original for a black and white animal.. .. I would have named her something different like Lily or Lavender... anyway I suppose I shouldn't complain, I've heard that there were some cows with some worse names in the past like Juicy Wiggle and Karisma... the farmer says that's what happens when you let the kids name the animals.
