Learning to make bouquets.

I may be a formally trained artist and I may be a flower farmer, but one thing I am not is a florist.

I think the art of bouquet making is a skill that takes time to learn; and takes years of practice and tacit knowledge handed down from florist to florist. There are so many wonderful resources out there helping me along the way and I’ve been soaking up any opportunity to learn.

This year I chose to plant some annuals to test out the waters.

My flowers have literally just started to bloom around our farm so I’m antsy to get started bouquet making.

For now, I’ll be plucking some blooms here and there to enjoy on our kitchen table.

Please feel free to follow along on my flower farming journey and now bouquet making endeavours

Adding pansies to my list of favourites.

May need to sow plenty of these as cut flowers next year. I’ve been researching Japanese pansies and if you know me, I love a double bloom. Mostly the reason I love peonies to begin with.

I’ll be scouting and sourcing seeds left right and centre. If anyone knows a good seed source let me know!

June 14, 2026:

These irises were pulled and replanted from a terrible spot and a terrible fate.

My mother-in-law saw the rhizomes in a pile that had been excavated when we were terraforming our property so many years ago. She plopped them in their current home the same year we planted our first Shirley Temple peonies.

Anyways, all of this to say that it’s been an honour to watch them bloom right before peony season kicks off. They are the town cryer of the parade. They let us know that the peonies are on their way, and I think that’s magical. ✨

Evaluating what I’m capable of vs. what I can grow vs. I want to present to the world vs. what my mom would be proud of vs. what my children would be proud of. The list goes on.

Always a balance and a fine line.

Forever dialling the compass and keeping true to what I want to do vs. what’s been told sells. Business is business after all.

Call me old fashioned, but I still like posting photographs to Instagram.

I like a video here and there, but my internal compass always leads me to take photographs. Maybe it’s my art school training, or maybe it’s the over abundance of silly tiktoks and reels that inundated my feed that can be so well done, that I could never be in the same league.

Sticking with what I know and love.

Anyone else feel the same? Is there a resurgence in the air for real photography (no AI)?

My mind wanders to the tulips I’m missing in the garden while I work my 9-5. I wonder, while I’m daydreaming about them, do they ever think of me?
