The air smells so sweet right now around the apiary thanks to the clover that grows each year. The edges of the back roads and highways are in full bloom and hold the nectar and pollen that our bees are after. π π
Watering the bees is easy! We have you covered with our Bee Retreats or make one of your own! Any craft store will sell bags of multi-colored pebbles. Get a bag or two and pour them into a wide, shallow container. It should be large enough to hold a few ounces of water, but not so big that bees will drown. This can be a large dish from your kitchen or even just a frisbee!
π π
Worker bees are all female and have a very short lifespan (only roughly 30 days!), in her short life a worker bee will take on all of these different roles: housekeeper, nurse, attendant to the queen, architect, ventilator, guard and, finally, forager. Yep! They do it all. π π
Did you know? π π
No Mow May helps pollinators by allowing early season flowers to grow in our lawns, parks and greenspaces. This means more bees will have a chance to fuel up on nectar in the spring and take shelter in the shady grass without mower blades chopping up their food and habitat. We encourage you to join this effort! π π
Don't eat yellow snow! What's going on here? The bees fly out of the hive, even when there is still snow on the ground, to take 'cleansing flights' to P**P! They won't go inside the hive and will wait for warm sunny days like we're expecting this week. π π
Here is the first of a series of holiday recipe ideas using our own smoked honey, although you could use raw honey too! This prosciutto wrapped baked brie drizzled with our smoked honey will become your favorite holiday appetizer. Bring this to a holiday party and you will be remembered for this dish. Truly delicious...and we're not just saying that! Link to recipe in bio!
Save or screenshot for future reference! Honey is nature's all-natural sugar substitute. Use this handy guide as an easy way to replace processed sugar with honey.
Definitely a stay in and make mead kind of day. It's easy with our Mead Making Kits. Makes a unique gift as well! (Carboy not included) π π
Not only will you enjoy the soothing properties of the raw honey, but also extra vitamin C in the lemon! Ginger and it's wonderful properties round out this must have drink for when you are under the weather.

We love our new mugs drawn by our GREAT nephew!
This picture was in our inbox this week. Someone found this in their shed and asked us for help. When a swarm can't find suitable space, they will form an open air hive like this one. But don't worry, we made sure it found a home! π π
This cooler weather and amazing goodies from the garden have us wanting to roast things! These Honey Roasted vegetables did the trick. We use our signature Smoked Honey to add extra flavour.

As the honey season winds down we remember that a worker bee like this one gathers in her ENTIRE LIFE, 0.8 grams (0.0288 ounces) of honey. It requires 556 worker bees to gather a pound of honey. Bees fly more than once around the world to gather a pound of honey. The average life of a honey bee during the working season is about six weeks. Are we amazed? YES! Are we grateful? YES! The best way to help these bees and native species is to plant native plants. The Alberta Native Plant Council (ANPC) has a downloadable list of province-wide suppliers of native plants and seeds. You can find the Native Plant Source List on their website. https://anpc.ab.ca/ It's never too late to start planning next year's garden!!!
Another year of extracting almost done. What a year! Winter losses had us working hard to build back the health and strength of our bees. The battle with controlling Varroa mites continues. These little creatures continue to amaze us with their resiliency and perseverance. We are privileged to be their 'keepers'.
Just something about this view...
Super excited for this collaboration with OEB Breakfast Co. Details coming soon!

We are so amazed by and grateful for these insects. Celebrate International Bee Day with us! You can do these things to help the bees and other pollinators in your community.
1. Plant flowers and shrubs/trees that produce pollen and nectar.
2. Avoid using pesticides, herbicides and fungicides in your garden.
3. Add a watering station to your landscaping. Always add rocks that ensure the bees and butterflies have a safe place to drink from.
4. Buy local! Especially buy your honey from a local beekeeper.
5. Learn more about food production and the importance of bees. https://www.planetbee.org/why-we-need-bees
We have some really tough queens coming out of winter who are producing brood patterns that are amazing. Boxes full of bees and brood getting ready to hatch makes splitting easier. Our new queens will have strong hives to be welcomed into. On another note, we found all of the missing hive tools! Where is the strangest place you've found a lost hive tool?
Splitting hives in the spring requires searching for the queen and very precise work. No gloves required!
Here's our wish for all beekeepers this season...A great beekeeping season with perfect weather, just the right amount of rain and no other unforeseen setbacks! Like many other beekeepers this year we saw some losses. If all goes well we will bounce back quickly.
We have Mother's Day covered! Honey, bee watering stations, fire starters, lip balms, flower bombs and gift boxes! Message us or visit our website www.beavercreekhoney.ca

A lot of great ideas here to try to live in a more 'green' way. How many squares can you check off this year? We have a few that we are definitely adding to our list for next year. Why not pledge to do more next year on this Earth Day! The earth and the bees will thank you!

Don't be alarmed if you see bees at your bird feeders in early spring like these bees were! They're foraging for cracked corn dust, which resemble pollen grains and contains trace amounts of corn pollen.
As the weather continues to warm up and as their pollen sources start to become readily available, they will be back to foraging on the good stuff!
New labels are here! Loving these for our lip balms. Each one is hand poured and uses our very own beeswax. www.beavercreekhoney.ca
Labeling and packaging our flower bombs get us excited for Spring! We are definitely thinking about the wonderful work that we have ahead with our bees. The flower bomb kits are fun for the whole family to make. We source our wildflower seeds from the wonderful .

The stars of the show!
Smoked Honey- we cold smoke this honey in small batches to get it smoked to perfection in our special way. This honey is perfect on grilled meat and veggies, as a base for a marinade, sauce, or vinaigrette. Once you add it to your charcuterie board you will never be able to be without it!
Iced Honey- This honey is transformed by extreme cold and we put it through a creaming process in that state. The result is a silky smooth spreadable honey. Perfect for spreading on things, like toast!
Raw Honey- Our raw honey is as natural as can be. Right from our hives, filtered and bottled by us.
