🦃 Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Ruby Roots! 🍂

Before anyone gets any ideas… Tom is NOT on the menu. 😂

Around here, his job description is pretty simple: look handsome, pose for pictures, and enjoy being spoiled. 📸🦃

While Tom enjoys another Thanksgiving with his feathers intact, we've got plenty of delicious things to help make your holiday table a little more special. 🍁

🦃 Tom's off the menu, but there's still plenty of goodness to go around! Visit rubyroots.ca

Yesterday was a big day for Ruby Roots Farm. ❤️

A huge thank you to Homestead Lavender for having us at the trade show. It was such a great event, and we’re very happy to say we’ll be joining them again next year.

We also want to thank everyone who stopped by our table, chatted with us, picked up a jar, browsed the books, or took a little piece of Ruby Roots home with them.

The response to Rusty & Ruby was especially incredible. Watching people pick up the books, flip through them, smile, and take them home was pretty special — and the colouring books were a huge hit too.

For a little farm still growing into its big ideas, days like yesterday mean a lot.

Thank you for supporting local, supporting small business, and supporting Ruby Roots Farm.

We came home tired, happy, and with considerably fewer things than we arrived with. 😂

See you next year, Homestead Lavender. 💜

Fresh batch of Ruby Roots Farm Sweet & Smoky BBQ Sauce is bottled, labelled, and ready for the trade show! 🍅🔥

Sweet, smoky, and made right here at Ruby Roots Farm — we’ve got a whole lineup packed and ready to go.

Now that the sauce is finished, it’s officially starting to feel like trade show time. 😄

Hope to see some familiar faces there — and maybe a few new ones too!

Come say hello, check out what we’ve been working on, and grab a bottle while you’re there. ❤️

Apparently the backhoe needed a spa day. 😂

She was running perfectly fine, but she was starting to look like nobody loved her. And around here, I have a thing about equipment looking like someone actually owns it.

So, while the weather was still good, we figured we might as well get a fresh coat of paint on her and clean her up a bit.

Did any of this make her run better?
Absolutely not.

Does she now look like someone owns her?
Absolutely. 😂
Of course, we decided this was an excellent project to tackle in all the “spare time” we had leading up to the trade show.

There was sanding, painting, crawling underneath her, a little swearing, and—as always—a highly qualified canine supervision crew making sure the job was done properly.

But she’s back together, looking respectable again, and there were no mysterious leftover parts.

Derek, of course, couldn’t wait to get her dirty again. Apparently she was looking a little too clean for his liking. 😂

I’m calling that a win.

Just another day at Ruby Roots Farm. 🌱

The meat birds arrived yesterday. 🐥

For now they’re just tiny yellow fluff balls, settling into the brooder with fresh bedding, feed, water and plenty of heat.

These little guys are being raised for food, and one of the things I appreciate about doing it ourselves is knowing exactly how they’ve been cared for from day one.

At the moment, their schedule is pretty demanding: eat, sleep, peep loudly, repeat… with the occasional chick pile thrown in for good measure. 😂

Welcome to Ruby Roots, little ones.

We’re getting ready to pack up Ruby Roots Farm and head to the Walk of Colours & Vendor Market at Homestead Lavender on October 3! 🍂

We’ll be bringing a little bit of everything — rhubarb goodies, handmade gifts, Rusty & Ruby books, free colouring books for the kids and even a few things that haven’t made it onto the website yet.

I put together a little preview of what we’re bringing and all the market details over on the Ruby Roots Farm website.

Apparently I grew gourds.

And apparently some of them had plans of their own. 😂

They started out looking perfectly innocent — little green things hanging around in the garden, minding their own business.

Then they turned yellow.

Then they got lumpy.

Then one of them apparently decided it wanted to become a farm creature.

I honestly have no idea what I’m going to do with these yet, but I can confirm they are definitely not boring.

Anyone know what you’re supposed to do with a gourd that looks like it has elbows?

And that’s a wrap on the tomatoes. 🍅

The last of them are off the plants and spread across the counter to finish ripening.

Some are red.

Some are almost red.

Some are very much committed to being green for the foreseeable future.

And then there’s this guy.

Apparently one tomato wasn’t enough, so he decided to come as a three-pack. 😂

After a summer of picking, preserving, freezing and trying to keep up with them, I can't say I'm entirely sad to see the end of tomato season.

Although I know perfectly well that sometime around February I'll be looking at a grocery-store tomato and wondering why I didn't grow twice as many.

Gardeners have very short memories. 😂
