Important Notice for JL Cake & Chocolate Gift Certificate Holders

When I announced that JL Cake & Chocolate would be closing at the end of December, my intention was to continue baking until then in order to honour all outstanding gift certificates.

Unfortunately, my health has continued to change, and I am finding the physical demands of baking increasingly difficult. I may need to wind down operations sooner than originally planned.

If you currently hold an unused JL Cake & Chocolate gift certificate — including one purchased through a radio auction — please contact me by August 31 with the value of your certificate and, if possible, a photo of it.

At this stage, I am trying to identify how many gift certificates remain outstanding so that I can determine the best way to honour them as the business closes.

Thank you for helping me get an accurate picture of what remains outstanding — and, as always, thank you for your patience and understanding as I navigate the closure of JL Cake & Chocolate.

An Award-Nominated Year & A Change of Pace

This past year has brought opportunities I never imagined. Seeing my work featured in MINT Wedding Magazine and being named a finalist for Best Wedding Baker at the Saskatchewan Wedding Industry Awards were both tremendous honours. Thank you to everyone who has supported JL Cake & Chocolate along the way.

As many of you know, I have been undergoing medical investigations. While I am hopeful about the treatment options available, the physical demands of running a custom-order business are no longer sustainable for me.

Radio Auction Vouchers

If you hold a voucher from the recent radio auction, please know that it will be honoured. Because I do not have contact information for voucher holders, I ask that you reach out when you are ready to plan your order.

My current plan is to conclude custom-order production at the end of December 2026 and transition JL Cake & Chocolate to a much smaller wholesale chocolate-focused business model. If you are holding a voucher, please contact me well in advance so we have adequate time to complete your order before that transition occurs.

Custom Orders & Online Shop

Effective immediately, I am closing my regular custom order calendar and online shop. Aside from honouring existing commitments and radio auction vouchers, I will not be accepting new custom orders at this time.

A selection of JL Cake & Chocolate products will continue to be available through Olea Oil + Vinegar.

The answers I receive regarding my health over the coming months will help shape what the future looks like, but for now, this is the most sustainable path forward.

There will always be something creative happening in my kitchen or studio.

One of the greatest compliments a client can give is not:
“Can you make this?”

It’s:

“I’ve seen your work. I trust you.”

There is a difference.

One is trusting technique.

The other is trusting artistic expression.

For this cake, the brief was simple: Old Port Montreal, history, and art.

There was trust that I would take those ideas and interpret them through my own artistic lens.

As artists, we spend years developing a style, a voice, and a way of seeing. Moments like this remind me that my favourite clients are not simply purchasing a cake. They are investing in an artist and giving them permission to create.

It is a privilege to be invited to craft part of the message you are sending to someone you care about.

The goal was never to create an Instagram moment.

The goal is not to create for social media impressions or to go viral. The goal is to create art for an emotional moment in your life.

When someone trusts me with that responsibility, I do not take it lightly.

I am not simply decorating a cake. I am helping create a visual expression of celebration, love, gratitude, remembrance, accomplishment, or joy.

For a brief moment, I am entrusted with helping tell someone else’s story. That trust means a great deal to me.

And the 5-star review was the cherry on top.
