Barolo for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! 💫What a whirlwind of a visit we had in Alberta and BC with

Azelia has 7 crus and those fortunate to have tasted some of the single vineyard wines, back vintage and current, understand why we’re completely head over heels for these wines.

Something you may not know, their Barolo classico and Langhe Nebbiolo are a blend of 7 crus. In other words the grapes are not from the general Barolo area but specifically from superior sites.

Another fun fact: they work with exceptionally old vines (up to 100+ years in some plots) and only replant when the vine no longer produces any berries.

“As a physician and scientist, I believe there is not enough proof to impose ‘no safe limit for alcohol consumption’ as a general health policy directive...” – Dr. Laura Catena

Episode 83 of Read Between the Wines featuring the incredible Dr. Laura Catena — physician, fourth-generation vintner, and the mind behind In Defense of Wine. 🍷💬

Host Pierre and Dr. Catena dive deep into the headlines, myths, and science around wine, health, and culture — questioning everything you think you know about alcohol risk, moderation, public health messaging, and why wine with food, friends, and meaning can’t be reduced to a single number or fear-based soundbite.

If you love wine culture, honest data, and thoughtful conversation that defends nuance in a world of noisy narratives, this one’s for you.

The wine world lost a quiet giant with the unexpected passing of Pierre Trimbach a couple weeks ago.

After studying viticulture and oenology in Beaune and training in Alsace and Napa, Pierre joined the family business as chief winemaker in 1979. He represented the 15th generation.

For generations, the name Maison Trimbach has stood for purity, precision, and unwavering integrity in Alsace. Pierre carried that legacy not with noise, but with conviction — championing dry, age-worthy Riesling when the world leaned sweet, defending tradition while never standing still.

Named one of the Top Ten White Winemakers in the world by Decanter magazine in 2006, under his guidance, icons like Clos Sainte Hune continued to define what greatness looks like in a glass.

But beyond the labels and accolades, Pierre was a steward — of family, of vineyards, of history. He understood that wine is memory made tangible, and he dedicated his life to preserving both.

The loss is deeply felt. Yet every bottle opened, every table gathered around a glass of Trimbach, will carry his spirit forward.

Sustainability is a word that everyone is using at the moment, and rightly so, but it does not just mean protecting the environment.

For sustainability rests on three essential pillars that are equally important:
1
1️⃣ environmental
2️⃣ social
3️⃣ economic

The environment is at the heart of every decision made in the vineyards and winery.

They pay their growers on preferential terms to ensure access to the best grapes and the longevity of their relationships.

And it is the social pillar that drives their mission to raise awareness and create opportunities for women in the wine industry.

With its exceptional quality and authentic story, Le Bijou de Sophie Valrose aligns always makes for a great conversation around the table 💕

It has been a worrisome 4 weeks for small wine import businesses like ours.

The BCGEU strike has left import wine and spirit agencies unable to deliver to restaurants and retailers.

And it’s hurting our small business.

What traditionally is the start of a busy holiday season is suddenly 0 dollars and we are in the 5th week.

On top of that, there are millions of dollars in products that we have paid for fully stuck in warehouses because distribution is restricted to government channels.

Remember, behind every stalled shipment are people who work in one of the hundreds of small businesses -- all feeling the weight of uncertainty of our livelihoods. Behind every empty shelf is someone’s hard work, passion, and livelihood.

We need this to be resolved soon.

If you know someone whose livelihood is affected by the strike, please write to your MLA to modernize and strengthen BC’s liquor supply chain. Send us a DM and we’d be happy to provide a template.
