🇨🇦 The State of Farming in Canada
Canadian farmers work tirelessly to produce the food that feeds our families. While agriculture remains one of Canada's most important industries, farmers continue to face significant challenges.
Here are three facts:
🌾 1. Canada has fewer farms than in the past.
The 2021 Census of Agriculture recorded 189,874 farms, down from 193,492 in 2016 and continuing a long-term trend toward fewer, but generally larger, farms.
👨🌾 2. Farmers are getting older.
The average age of a Canadian farm operator is 56 years, highlighting the importance of encouraging the next generation to enter agriculture.
📈 3. Farming costs continue to rise.
Farm operating expenses have increased over recent years, even as many producers work hard to remain profitable. At the same time, Canada's total net farm income reached $12.7 billion in 2025, reflecting both opportunities and ongoing financial pressures within the industry.
