Hands down, this is one of my favorite tasks of the year. While I work, I like to dream about who each new herd member will be, what personalities they will have, and how they will impact our herd. Who will be the boss? The goofball? The miracle? We'll soon learn!

In the early stages of growth, elk antlers are soft, delicate & very vascular. When bumped, the antlers can become injured. Thankfully, this wound is small & is likely to heal up without any issues. At this point, it requires no intervention. That being said, antler injuries, especially when they take place in the heat of summer, are at risk for fly infestation & and infection and can lead to major complications. Even though it's minor, we will keep close eyes on this one to make sure it continues to heal as it should.

Meet our biggest spiker of 2025. Even though spiker antlers do not predict the future, we're really looking forward to seeing what he grows as a 2 year old!

It's been 7 weeks since Riker shed, and this is what he's grown so far. While he's the biggest, we're having so much fun watching each of our 21 of our bulls starting to pop!

Just when I think I've seen it all!

Who's ready for some calving season spam? Just a few more weeks until the season will kick off!

04/24/2026

That means it's full steam ahead for the 2026 Antler Growing Season!

Not long ago, our bulls were bald & pastures bare. Fast forward to today, and all 21 bulls have started to grow antlers, and our herd has gone from eating 10-14 bales a week down to 4. So happy that Spring has finally decided to stick around!

All eyes will be on the 2 Year olds this summer. This year's antlers will give us a glimpse of what each of these boys will grow each year. Typical? Non typical? Time will tell!! Sneaking suspicions that Doodlebop is going to be firmly in the Non typical category.

These little dudes are a unique bunch. Hormones are starting to flow, and personalities are starting to show. They are rambunctious, fun, and gaining attitude. It's an exciting time as we watch them grow their very first antlers, and start to see who the trouble makers are going to be!

I was hoping this method would work so I could catch it on video.
