If you’re uncertain if you’re at risk and on a private well refer to your well record to determine your status. If you do not have a physical copy of your well record it’s possible that you can view it online:

https://www.ontario.ca/page/map-well-records

If no record is available, a licensed well drilling company can generate one for you by measuring and performing a pump test.

The most important information on the well record in this instance is how many gallons or litres per minute (gpm) your well is capable of producing. You can then compare this to how many gpm your pump is capable of producing. For example, if you have a 15 gpm well and a 10gpm pump, you are at very low risk of running out of water.

If not, and your well head terminates above ground, determine whether it is a dug well, or a drilled well, and safely remove the cover. Dug wells are extremely dangerous so do not attempt to uncover if you’re not comfortable with this process. If it’s a drilled well it should have a vermin proof cap that will be sealed by fasteners. Using a high powered flashlight you may be able to visually inspect the water level in your well.

If you are at high risk of or have already ran dry, it’s critical you bypass any water treatment and shut the power off to your pump or it may destroy itself. It is recommended that every capable person in your home understand how to safely shut off your well pump. Bypassing water treatment may cause damage to the system if left out of service for prolonged periods of time. It may also put people at risk of bacteria due to rendering Ultraviolet Light disinfection ineffective. If you are uncertain of this, consult a professional.

Despite all of this, remember we are blessed in that we live in a place in the world with an abundance of safe, clean, easily obtainable groundwater. It’s all of our responsibility to preserve and protect this valuable resource so that it may be enjoyed and utilized for many generations to come.
