FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RE: COURT RULING ON THE UNLAWFUL REMOVAL OF THE REMAINS OF FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU FROM A MORTUARY IN SOUTH AFRICA
Fellow Zambians,
I am deeply outraged by the developments confirmed through a court ruling in the Republic of South Africa regarding the unlawful removal of the remains of our former Head of State, Edgar Lungu.
This is a national embarrassment of the highest order. It is shocking. It is unacceptable.
And it is profoundly disrespectful not only to the late President, but to his family and to the people of Zambia.
There are values that define us as a nation.
Respect for the dead is one of them.
To violate that principle under any circumstances is to cross a line that should never be crossed in a civilized society.
And when such a violation is confirmed by a court of law, it demands more than silence. It demands accountability.
I therefore call for the following, without delay:
A full and transparent explanation from the Zambian authorities regarding their role, if any, in this unlawful act;
Immediate identification of all individuals and institutions involved;
And swift action to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Zambians deserve the truth. Not partial statements, not evasive responses. The full truth.
This moment must not be politicized but neither must it be trivialized. Because what has happened strikes at the heart of our national character.
If we cannot guarantee dignity for a former Head of State in death, what does that say about us as a country?
I stand in solidarity with the family of Edgar Lungu during this painful and distressing time. They have suffered enough.
I urge all Zambians to remain calm but resolute in demanding accountability, transparency, and respect for the rule of law.
Let this be a turning point. Let it remind us that no authority is above the law. And let it reaffirm our commitment as a people to dignity, justice, and decency.
