Geo-Neutral ‘Earth Cup’ Goes from Drink to Dust

An innovative maker of super-sustainable packaging that brings an ancient material into modern society.

The inventive packaging is from a Berlin, Germany, and San Francisco-based technology company that creates “drink to dust” terracotta cups that may be the ultimate real-world example of packaging circularity.

The cup of this kind is made using three simple ingredients---clay, water and salt. And there’s a bowl, too, along with other packaging options. The products make a premium-level favorable impression, yet are economical. The packaging, which is manufactured using additive manufacturing aka 3D printing technology, is considered “geo-neutral”. It refers to natural materials that leave behind zero harmful waste.

Cups or bowls of this kind can be used with any food product or any hot or cold drink. Additionally, the packaging provides natural insulation properties and elevates the on-the-go dining experience versus typical food service packaging.

How Better Juice and Louis Dreyfus Company use science to cut sugar in beverages

The two businesses have developed enzymatic processes that turn natural sugars into beneficial nutrients — and, they say, keep drinks sweet.

Fruit juices deliver several things consumers look for in beverages: something nutritious, clean label, tasty, natural and portable.

But these beverages are also high in sugar. Squeezing the juice out of fruits concentrates all of the natural sugars. A single glass of juice contains the sugar content of several fruits.

According to USDA data, 12 fluid ounces of 100% orange juice has 31.2 grams of sugar. In comparison, a regular-sized can of cola, also 12 fluid ounces, has 36.8 grams of sugar. Studies have shown that drinking juice can have as many health consequences as drinking sugar-sweetened beverages.

While many companies lower the sugar content in their juices by mixing them with water, less-sweet juices or artificial sweeteners, some companies use food tech to do it differently.

Israel-based Better Juice uses an enzymatic process to convert sugars into other compounds, including fibers and proteins. This procedure keeps the juice tasting sweet, stay nutritious and remove many of the naturally occurring sugars.

“The main goal for the industry is to reduce sugar, and most of the companies are trying to find a different substitute,” said Gali Yarom, co-founder of Better Juice. An engineer who has worked at several food and dairy companies, she said Better Juice looks to “really reduce sugar and not replace the sugar.”

As the story goes, a leaf once fell into the water and changed the taste of it. Henceforth, tea was born. Tea is one of the three major drinks in the world, produced in more than 60 countries and regions worldwide and enjoyed by over two billion people.

The moist clouds that ring Huangshan Mountain – which covers an area of 160 square kilometers – are believed to form a natural layer of shelter, blocking the sunlight and allowing the tea leaves cultivated there to produce more nitrogen content that gives them their distinctive aroma.

As a result, the celebrated Huangshan Maofeng, Taiping Houkui and Qimen Black Tea produced in Huangshan have won worldwide popularity.

In 2022, Huangshan city's tea industry had a total output of 45,000 metric tons, up 4.7 percent year-on-year, generating 4.6 billion yuan ($664.42 million) in revenue, a year-on-year increase of 7 percent.

If food and beverage quality is the bottom line, packaging will be a never-neglected margin engine. I do believe the competition for F&B products in packaging is getting fiercer and fiercer. The reason is obvious, packaging can talk, prolong fresh-keeping duration, and ensure excellent mouthfeel.

3D Bio-print Tech Runs onto Race Track of Food, Mimic Fish Fillet Debuts Stunningly

Not long ago, an international high-tech food company successfully customized bio ink using grouper cells and printed a highly imitated ingredient with a taste comparable to that of real-world "cultivated grouper". This move once again made the application of 3D bio-print tech in the food and beverage industry a trendy topic.

In response to the stunning news, reviews outside are of great diversity. For example, "Are printed things edible?", "That might as well to be true for print-outs are non-toxic and harmless", "Really? What a terrific anticipation!”... Maybe, out of dual purpose of celebrating its phase milestone and dispelling outside doubts, the company held a try-out experience event specifically at its facility in Israel; aside from the invited executives of corporate partner and officials from the Singapore Embassy in Israel, the Prime Minister of Israel also attended the scene and witnessed the entire process of printing this simulated fish and meat food, thereby becoming the first high-ranking official to taste this 3D printed food. As a senior executive interviewed commented, "In this first tasting, we showcased a cultivated product that flakes, tastes, and melts in your mouth exactly like excellent fish should. In the coming months..."

From this, I can sense that the news is really not a piece hyped! Relying on bio-print and bio-ink tech, structured hybrid and cultivated products are bound to make a splash in food & beverage industry...

Moreover, China stated it is willing to speed up risk assessment processes for areas in Brazil that are free from foot-and-mouth disease, while Brazil promises to invite Chinese experts to Brazil to carry out on-site assessments as soon as possible, and the two sides will jointly promote relevant assessment and accreditation work.
