The active part is L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea leaves. China approved it as a new food ingredient in 2014. On a pet label it rarely appears as an isolated amino acid. It usually arrives as green tea crude extract.
The ingredient has two forms. A crude extract blends easily and costs less. An isolated 98% L-theanine gives a brand a number to print on the label. Same plant, two different positions in the market.
It almost never works alone, either. It sits beside L-tryptophan, casein hydrolysate or GABA.
