Starbucks reaches milestone of 100 million coffee trees donated to farmers to support the future of coffee.🌿

set the goal in 2017 to donate 100 million coffee trees to help smallholder coffee farmers renovate aging or disease-prone plots and improve the productivity of their farms. Many of the trees donated draw on research advanced here at Hacienda Alsacia.

Starbucks is also committing to donating an additional 50 million trees selected for their performance in climate-adverse conditions to farms in strategic origins such as Ethiopia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Colombia, Costa Rica and Honduras, among others, while continuing to support farmers in El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.

A bee🐝 will move pollen from flower to flower. But what does that have to do with coffee?

Coffee trees can self-pollinate, and our agronomists working out of our global research and development hub will also carry out this process by-hand to selected trees—moving pollen between our very best ones, in order to create new varieties of hybrid coffee trees that can help protect coffee’s future, as well as ensuring a high quality cup.

As for bees? They help support a healthier ecosystem and contribute to the overall biodiversity of our farms. Together, these processes are protecting the coffee you love, the communities that produce it, and the planet we depend upon.

🌿 Step inside our newly renovated Greenhouse.
Nestled quietly at the corner of our Visitor Center, between the slopes that overlook our farm, and tucked just beneath the coffee tree demo plots where we showcase research and development. Inside, captured on the walls by artist , is tribute to the important process of cross-pollination by our agronomists, and the labor of love it takes to ensure the future of coffee from the tip of a paintbrush, moving pollen from one tree to another - like an artist paints their canvas.

We developed our Greenhouse for gathering. An exquisite place on the grounds of our Visitor Center, designated as space for togetherness and community.

Expands Global Effort to Protect Future of Coffee with Two New Coffee Farms 🌱

Starbucks today announced an expansion of its collaborative coffee innovation network, further connecting farmers from around the world with resources to protect the future of coffee. Building on the groundbreaking global agronomy innovation at Hacienda Alsacia, Starbucks first company-operated coffee farm, the company added farms located in Guatemala and Costa Rica with future farm investments in Africa and Asia. The learning on these farms aims to find solutions to increase productivity on farms, support increased profitability for farmers and build climate resilience.

The new farms in Costa Rica and Guatemala will both study hybrid coffee varieties under different elevations and soil conditions, which is a critical step in the research of new genetic material. The farm in Costa Rica, located next to Hacienda Alsacia, will also be designed to explore the use of mechanization, drones and other technologies to help support labor availability challenges that farmers in Latin America are facing.
