Tried something new today.
Gaeng hunglay g*i.
A northern style curry, sweet n sour in flavor without coconut milk.
This is usually made with a fatty cut of meat like pork belly, but since i had chicken in the fridge i decided to use that instead.
Still turned out great.
I will definitely try this with pork belly though as this feels like a hidden treasure i need to experience now. 🇹🇭

Tried my first Mala Tang Restaurant today. The concept is as simple as it is genius.
You start by picking the ingredients you want in your dish from a large selection of refrigerated or frozen items into a bowl. This bowl is the weighed and determines the price of your meal.

Next you choose a broth and aromatics and your bowl of soup is prepared for you.

Once your number us called you can pick up your hot bowl and take it to the topping station where you will find herbs, peanuts, chili flakes and other condiments.

The result is as unique as it is delicious and made according to your own taste!
At an affordable price, this will be one of my new favorites for quick dinners on the go.

Craving beers and hearty German food, we went to Eichbaums Malzwerk in Mannheim the other day and had some tasty and quite filling hearty, meaty and very traditional meals.

Beef Rouladen with Spätzle and crispy Pork Knuckle with Semmelknödel got us feeling plenty fed. The beer was cold, the food was hot, the atmosphere was great, so we will be back for more!

Discovered a new place called “District Siam” on Maps while looking for a place to eat tonight. First time i have been able to find Banh Mi in the local area so i was really excited!
My last Banh Mi was in Ho Chi Minh over a year ago, so i was more than ready, even considering it would not be the same.
Boy, was i wrong!
This little mom n pop shop is run by two elderly Vietnamese folks who know what they are dishing up. I chose the Banh Mi Xa Xiu which is the roast red pork variant. I would have loved the crispy pork version but hey, i after a year who’s gonna be picky, right?!
The Banh Mi had my swimming in memories. The pate was thick, the pork juicy, the veggies fresh and the baguette crispy. A touch of their signature sauce brought it all together and left me contemplating having another. I could barely restrain myself.
My SO had the Bun Nem. Also very tasty, but we agreed the radish didn’t quite work for us here. So next time we will ask to leave it out.
Besides this minor detail, the flavor was on point. They served the sauce in a separate little bowl for your convenience and ag*in all the veggies were fresh and crisp!
We will definitely be coming back to this one in the near future to try more of their menu!

Today was one of those days. Looking through the freezer trying to find things you have a craving for and noticing you are all out!
For me that craving today was luk chin, thai style meatballs that u can find on pretty much any thai food market in the world. I was planning to skewer them, give em a quick bath in the fryer and serve em up with spicy tamarind sauce but as mentioned earlier i was out of luck!
So time to create and be prepared for my next time craving these.

The formula is pretty simple.
Buy some ground beef, freeze it halfway and finally add to a food processor with spices and some ice water and work it into a fine paste.

I chill the paste until my water is close to a slow simmer and then squeeze the individual meatballs out of my hand as i have seen the masterful ladies on the markets in thailand do many times.

From there it is merely a short bath in the hot water until the meatballs get a cold bath to stop the cooking and finally will be vacuum sealed and frozen. Minus the approximate 13 i could not resist of course! 🤣

On a roll with these thai food festivals in the area and not even thinking about stopping.
This weekend we return to Viernheim right at the Rhein Neckar Zentrum. This is the second time a festival is being held here and ag*in the selection was very pleasing! I already had 2 meals here the past 2 days and might even return for a third tomorrow.

This weeks hunt yielded a plate of khao bhed moo krob, a tasty bowl of khao soi and a generous helping of khao ka mhu which i could barely finish.

I really only went to one single food stall here as i was so pleasantly delighted by last nights meal, that i wanted to try the other items on their menu.
Zaab street food. I will hand it to ya. Coming down from Berlin to cook for us was a great decision. I hope to see you ag*in.

We went back to Sujitras Thai Palast yesterday to get some more of their tasty cooking.
This time we had guai tiew, gaeng panang with crispy duck, pad kaprao g*i sap and pad see ew g*i.
I do think they are a bit heavy on the vegetables and the ka prao was not up to par on chili content, but i guess we need to let em know we eat proper thai style and can handle a couple of xtra chilies in our food!

That being said, flavors were great and we will be frequently filling our bellies here.
